Lorde's Not Responding to Racist Attacks

by Maitri Suhas

"UGH, TEENS," I am usually grumbling, but today more than ever, because a bunch of teens and even tweens have let their true, racist colors show re: tiny New Zealander Lorde's new boyfriend, James Lowe who is of Asian descent, and who, according to the horrible wide world of teenage Twitter (which seems more perilous than the dark Internet), is 2 ugly 4 her love.

TEENS!!! Who's teaching them this unabashed racism? Is it in fact "subversive" celebrities like Tyler the Creator, who reposted the photo of Lorde and Lowe on a beach, with the caption "Hhahahahahah" (verbatim)? Keep in mind that Mr. The Creator is indeed a 22-year-old man, mocking a young girl who is only 17. Thankfully, Lorde responded in her usual classy fashion — she tweeted back: "Is that supposed to make me feel something?"

Regardless of the disgusting and vile tween tweets that have erupted from one simple photo of a girl and her boyfriend, the 17-year-old Lorde hasn't responded in kind or at all to the "backlash," which is honestly just brazen and crude racism. She's no stranger to controversy — earlier this year she called out Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez as "fucking mental" in an interview with GQ: "The difference between those kids and me," she says, "is that I grew up completely normally and went to parties and had that experience."

At the end of the day, though, no matter how mature little Miss Lorde is, she's still a 17-year-old girl, and though her humble beginnings have kept her grounded, there's honestly no telling how teenage girls will respond to bullies. Especially hateful, racist ones that are hiding with cowardice behind the guard of an 140-character tweet.

Hopefully Lorde keeps her cool as she has done thus far, and maybe she can put out a remix: "And we'll never be raaaacist."
