Obama Took A Selfie With Bear Grylls

by Alicia Lu

It's times like this that make it especially difficult to say goodbye to President Obama. Will we ever have another president who kills it this hard on Instagram? (Imagining Jeb Bush's Instagram just shrivels the heart.) On Tuesday, Obama shared an Instagram selfie with Bear Grylls during his trip to Alaska, proving once again that the man's social media game is unparalleled. Obama's hang session with Grylls is part of the president's tour of Alaska to raise awareness for its preservation and the effects of climate change and will also be featured on an upcoming episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls. Nope, we will probably never have a president this cool ever again.

On Monday night, Obama took over the White House's Instagram account to announce his trip to Alaska and that he would be sharing photos from the Last Frontier. Accompanying a photo taken from Air Force One, Obama wrote:

Hey everyone, it's Barack. Incredible view as we near Anchorage. I'll be spending the next few days touring this beautiful state and meeting with Alaskans about what’s going on in their lives. Looking forward to sharing it with you. -bo

Besides documenting the gorgeous Kenai Fjords National Park and revealing how much Exit Glacier has receded due to climate change, Obama also snapped a selfie with famed British adventurer Grylls, along with the most brilliant caption:

That's an adorable joke that I would laugh at even if it didn't come from the president, but the fact that it came from Obama just makes it that much more endearing.

In return, Grylls also posted a selfie of the two of them on his Instagram account, writing in the caption that what Obama was doing was "inspiring."

Though the meeting was filmed for an episode of Running Wild With Bear Grylls, which is slated to air on NBC later this year, Obama will not be subjected to the extreme activities that regular celebrity guests normally engage in. In previous episodes, guest stars like Michelle Rodriguez, Kate Winslet, and Zac Efron have put their survival skills to the test and learned extreme survival tactics from Grylls, like boiling a mouse in their own urine and then eating it.

However, when asked about the prospects of Obama consuming his own urine — a common theme on the show — White House Press Secretary told reporters:

I will not deny your suspicion that there may have been some suggestions put forward by the Bear Grylls team that were not approved by the Secret Service.

I think Running Wild fans can live with that, especially since Obama has gifted them with such a wonderful selfie. Here are some of the other gorgeous shots Obama has taken during his Alaska trip so far.
