What Will Happen To The Tyrells On 'GoT'?

by Caroline Gerdes

When fans started snapping pictures in of Maisie Williams filming Game of Thrones Season 6 in Girona, Spain, the Internet went wild. The photos show what could be interpreted as GoT Season 6 spoilers, possibly including some plots from the yet-to-be-released Winds of Winter installment of the Song of Ice and Fire series. But photos from this location haven't only been hints about Arya Stark's uncertain future, they could also be giving fans Game of Thrones Season 6 spoilers about the Tyrells. Both Margaery and Loras were left in a dangerous situation at the end of Season 5 — so, could we be seeing a possible sneak peek at what will happen to the Tyrells in Season 6?

Onlookers in Girona took to the Internet, posting the above photos and reporting what they witnessed on the GoT sets, notably extras assembling to rehearse marching Tyrell banners. And now I just have so many questions. Why is House Tyrell gathering their troops? This relatively peaceful family hasn’t led a march since Season 2 with Renly — which didn’t end well. The Tyrells have done a lot since then to support King’s Landing and Margaery Tyrell’s marriage to Tommen Baratheon has solidified a bond. But, with Margaery and Loras’ imprisonment in the Season 5 cliffhanger, things look like they are about to change.

Spoilers also predict that, since the show has caught up with George R.R. Martin’s books for the most part, the forthcoming Winds of Winter may lay the framework for Season 6 of the HBO series. The Tyrell story at the end of A Dance with Dragons is basically where we left off in Season 5 — so, in this case, readers no longer really have an edge over viewers. (Ha!)

So, what can we glean from the set and spoilers? Obviously House Tyrell isn't going to let their own remain in prison — so, here are six reasons the Tyrells could be assembling.

1. Margaery And Loras Are Breaking Out

In A Dance with Dragons, Margaery and Loras’s father, Mace, “refuses to march his army from the city before his daughter is acquitted” and tensions fester. Though this could be the reason for the banners and men on set, we still do not know how the two are freed.

2. The Tyrells Have Had Enough Of The Lannisters

After all, Margaery was married to Joffrey, then Tommen, and Loras had a failed engagement to Cersei. The Tyrells just keep giving and the Lannisters seem less than grateful. Simply put, enough is enough.

3. It's Personal

While this guess is a tad more far-fetched, I’d love to see a Queen vs. Queen battle between Cersei and Margaery.

4. Tommen Is Dead

Let's face it, the Lannister twins' progeny haven't faired too well. If Tommen dies, will Margaery make a play for the crown?

5. Loras May Change, A Lot

Finn Jones, who plays Loras, has called Season 6 “shocking” and shared that his character gets a little “darker.” Jones told UK site, Express:

I was a little bit nervous when I got the scripts through but I’ve started filming now and so the nerves aren’t there anymore. So I know what’s happening, a lot of good stuff to do this year. Game of Thrones is always shocking, so it’s never going to stop shocking people ... the end of season six in particular is very shocking … There’s a transformation in Loras’s state and character and it’s fun to be able to go a little bit deeper and darker in the character.

6. Mace Tyrell Is Headed Home

According to Watchers on the Wall, in the midst of the buzz surrounding the Tyrell troops amassing, it is rumored that Mace Tyrell is coming home and his mother Olenna Tyrell is not happy about the kids’ imprisonment. Could this lead to marching orders?

The Tyrells have been making threats for the past five seasons of GoTand these spoilers might be proof that they're finally going to act in Season 6.
