'The Muppets' Have Some Great Guest Stars

by Caroline Gerdes

Tuesday on ABC we’ll find that our beloved childhood Muppets have grown up too. The Muppets , the franchise’s latest installment, promises a series “that is not your grandmother’s Muppets,” which leaves fans wondering what to expect. In the past, the show was always mature and satirical while appealing to kids with colorful characters and manageable doses of slapstick comedy. The new ABC trailers tease that classic Muppet humor is still present, along with another staple: Celebrity cameos on The Muppets.

The 2011 Jason Segel film The Muppets reignited the brand, by regaining the interest of longtime viewers and introducing new fans to the beloved, and fuzzy, ragtag crew. And, the film packed a lot of guest stars. Seriously, a lot. The movie featured Segel, Amy Adams, Rashida Jones, Tina Fey, Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Silverman, Donald Glover, Neil Patrick Harris, Dave Grohl, and Whoopi Goldberg, to name more than a few. So far, this show has an ad campaign featuring the cast members from popular ABC shows, so guest stars look promising. So, which celebrities will appear on The Muppets on ABC?

While half of the fun with Muppet cameos is the element of surprise, I'm sure more stars as slated to appear than we even know about now. But, here are 16 guest stars fans can for sure expect this season on The Muppets.

1. & 2. Elizabeth Banks & Reese Witherspoon

Banks and Witherspoon are expected to appear as guests on Miss Piggy’s late night talk show Up Late with Miss Piggy. Who else is strongly in favor of Miss Piggy as the new queen of late night?!

3. Josh Groban

Groban, who is no stranger to playing himself on TV — a la Parks and Recreation and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia— is, you guessed it, playing himself. But, this time, he is Miss Piggy’s new beau. Oh la la.

4. Imagine Dragons

The band is expected to perform their new single, “Roots,” on the show.

5. Riki Lindhome

The Garfunkel and Oates star, who is no stranger to playing with puppets, will appear as “Becky.”

6. Liam Hemsworth

We can only hope this means a Groban, Miss Piggy, Hemsworth love triangle. Who needs Kermit?

7. Topher Grace

Grace stars as himself as Miss Piggy's on-screen co-star in a period film. They also make out. Like I said, who needs Kermit?

8. — 16. A Lot More Stars …

Laurence Fishburne, Tom Bergeron, Jay Leno, Lea Thompson, Tracy Anderson, Meagan Fay, Jere Burns, Nilla Watkins, and Layla Alizada will also appear. That’s just everyone we know about, but I can’t wait to see who else appears on The Muppets on ABC, premiering Sept. 22.
