This Nail Polish Is Good Enough To Eat

by Kali Borovic

Toddlers and nail art don't exactly go hand-in-hand — until now. Kid Licks is a non-toxic nail polish made of vegetables, and it's so nutritious that you can even lick it right off your finger. Tiny fashionistas can now express their artistic side and get a helping of fruits and vegetables all at the same time.

There are a lot of nail polishes out there that claim to be non-toxic, but Kid Licks is healthy enough to eat, according to brand's site. Each of the three colorful hues — Beet Red, Barley Grass Green, and Sour Carrot — are completely organic and, yes, edible. They dry exactly like normal polish, but the removal process is easier than ever. Instead of using traditional polish removers to get the color off, you can use soap, water, and even saliva.

According to Refinery29, founders Audrey Amara and Josh Kroot got the winning idea from watching their own children. “We have four kids, and around the time when our oldest daughter started getting interested in doing things herself, she wanted to start painting her nails by herself," Amara told the website. "I started looking into what’s actually in nail polish and, since she puts everything in her mouth, I really didn’t trust her using regular nail polish or even nail polish for kids. So I thought, Wouldn’t that be great if there was an edible nail polish?"

Hence, Kid Licks was born.

Although the color does come off if you go swimming or take a shower, each $13.99 bottle lasts about two months if you keep it in the fridge. The dairy, nut, and gluten-free polish is so safe that you can actually store it right alongside your veggies. If I could have gotten my hands on a non-toxic polish when I was little, I might not be as terrible at painting nails as I am today.

Although Kid Licks claims to be the first completely edible polish on the market, it's not the first to use some unconventional ingredients. These five nail polishes also use unconventional ingredients to make their hues more eco- and family-friendly.

1. Honeybee Gardens

These nail enamels are all water-based, meaning they leave out the harsh ingredients.

(Watercolors Nail Enamel, Honeybee Gardens, $12.99)

2. NailKale

It's no secret that superfoods are good for you, and now they're good for your nails too. This polish is infused with kale and Vitamins A, C, and K, to keep your nails healthier, stronger, and more hydrated.

(NailKale, Sephora, $14)

3. Deborah Lippmann's Gold Digger

This polish contains 24 karat gold as well as ingredients like green tea extract and biotin.

(Gold Digger, Barneys New York, $50)

4. Play Love Laugh, Inc.

It doesn't get much more natural than this fruit and vegetable based polish. The quick-drying formula is perfect for on-the-go use and peels right off when you want a change.

(Merry Berry Berry, Play Love Laugh, Inc., $7.99)

5. Azature

This nail polish is made from black diamonds and costs $250,000 a bottle. Not completely practical, but it's definitely unusual. You can get the same color from the company for $12, but it's not quite the same.

(Black Diamond, Azature, $250,000)
