Have Your Neighbors Seen You Naked?

by Emma Cueto

I have bad news, everyone. Turns out there's a good chance your neighbors have probably seen you naked. In fact, according to a new study, most people have at some point seen a neighbor naked or doing something otherwise embarrassing. Which, sadly, makes a lot of sense, and as a New Yorker, I can say that this is probably why no one in this city makes eye contact with each other. We have all seen too much. Then again, I wasn't living in New York the time I saw my neighbors watching porn, so maybe everyone has seen too much.

The study, which was conducted in the UK, found that 97 percent of adults said they had seen their neighbors in an embarrassing situation through the windows at least once. One in three said they had seen them naked. Eight percent of people said they had seen their neighbors having sex. And it turns out that people are pretty shameless about spying on their neighbors, too — only 27 percent of participants said that they immediately turned away when they saw their neighbors doing or about to do something embarrassing.

The study was conducted by a company that sells window blinds, which means we should perhaps take its findings with a grain of salt. After all, they have a clear financial motive for wanting us to all be terrified of our nosy neighbors peering through our windows. But either way, it's working. I already want to go out and buy some good, thick curtains to block out all the creepers apparently lurking around.

A spokesperson from the company that sponsored the research, Web-Blinds.com, said, "Taking some time to re-evaluate the privacy of a home, and looking into how easy neighbours can see through some windows would help prevent embarrassing situations in the future." So here are some things that might help you keep your neighbors from seeing you through the windows.

Buy Some Blinds

I shouldn't have to tell you this, but if you don't have blinds or curtains, get them immediately.

Remember: It's Easier To See In At Night

At night, the inside of your house is brighter than the outside, which not only means your glowing open window is much more likely to stand out, but it's also easier to make out what's going on inside.

Curtains Do Not Close Themselves

Just because you have blinds or curtains or any other window-covering device, that doesn't mean anything if you don't shut them. Remember to keep them closed, especially at night.

If You Have Cats, Nothing Is Safe

You might not remember opening your blinds, but your cat does. Cat owners should be extra vigilant about checking their curtains are still closed — or that they're still there at all. Because cats are awful that way.
