How To Use Coconut Oil For Chafing

by Lindsey Rose Black

You know how coconut oil is basically good for everything? Well, I have yet another magical use for the wonder product! I'm breaking down exactly how to use coconut oil for chafing because it's a surprisingly effective DIY treatment method. With just a few ingredients, you can create your own simple coconut oil chafing treatment cream in minutes.

I have incredibly sensitive skin and have always struggled with inner thigh and groin chafing challenges. My first memory of the burning agony that is chafing happened in middle school volleyball camp. It was a super (super) humid day in Texas, and I had to run twenty laps around the football field in my spandex. Yes, tears were shed.

Since then, I've gotten a little wiser about how to prevent chafing, but it's definitely been a trial-and-error process. If you're still struggling to find the perfect treatment option to soothe stubborn chafing this season, I would definitely encourage you to reach for coconut oil!

XOJane's Louise Hung shared an amazing coconut chafing cream recipe that I've used as my baseline for years. I've tweaked it a bit with my favorite essential oils, so definitely feel free to do the same! Rub it over your inner thighs each morning before getting dressed and walking out the door to stay chafing-free.

To make coconut oil chafing treatment cream, you'll need:

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
  • 1/8 cup baking soda
  • 4 drops lavender oil (tea tree oil is also great, too!)

Put all the ingredients in a mason jar and stir until combined. That's all there is to it! Below are my favorite brands for each ingredient:

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, $8, Amazon

The price is just so good for how much organic coconut oil you get!

Premium Quality Arrowroot Starch Powder

Bob's Red Mill Premium Quality Arrowroot Starch Powder, $11, Amazon

Bob's Red Mill prices are consistently amazing. But, you can also check bulk bins at larger grocery stores and co-ops to see if they carry any arrowroot!

Pure Baking Soda

Bob's Red Mill Pure Baking Soda, $15, Amazon

Again, my obsession with Bob's Red Mill bulk bags continues.

Organic Lavender Essential Oil

Now Foods Organic Lavender Essential Oil, $17, Amazon

This oil might seem expensive, but you can use it in everything from the chafing cream to DIY face masks to a few drops on your pillow to help you fall asleep. A worthy splurge!
