'Making A Murderer's Jodi Speaks Out

by Jenny Hollander

In a bombshell interview airing Wednesday with Nancy Grace producer Natisha Lance, Steven Avery's former fiancé, Jodi Stachowski, revealed that she thinks Avery is guilty. Speaking about the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, of which Avery was convicted, Stachowski told Lance that Avery was a "monster," and "not innocent." Avery has always maintained his innocence, and the docuseries implies that he may even have been framed. On Tuesday, Avery filed for an appeal.

Viewers of the show will remember Stachowski as Avery's loving and supportive fiancé at the time of his arrest for murder. This perception, according to Stachowski, was a lie. "I ate two boxes of rat poison just so I could go the hospital ... and get away from him, and ask them to get the police to help me," she claimed to Lance. When asked by Lance if she had every loved Avery, Stachowski quickly responded, "No."

Her remarks come as a shock; many assumed that Stachowski, like many viewers of the hit Netflix docuseries, believed Avery to be innocent. Stachowski, after all, was engaged to Avery at the time that Halbach was killed, and Making a Murderer reveals that she spoke to him twice on the evening he's accused of murdering her. Although Stachowski initially stood by Avery and maintained that he was innocent, according to the docuseries, the two split while Avery was in jail and waiting for his trial for the murder of Halbach to begin. Stachowski had not publicly commented on either Avery or the docuseries until now.

When asked why she was choosing to speak out, a decade after Halbach's death and weeks after the airing of Netflix's Making a Murderer, Stachowski responded, "The truth. What a monster he is. And he's not innocent." You can watch a clip of her interview here.

Stachowski also claimed that she's received a series of letters from Avery from prison. She had opened only one, she said, but claimed that it was filled with threats. When asked for a comment by HLN, Avery's lawyers declined to comment.

The interview comes days after a Nancy Grace special that also cast doubt over Avery's innocence. As Us Weekly reported, Grace declared, "I love Making a Murderer. It's beautifully put together, it's just leaving out about 60 or 70 percent of the evidence. I don't think our justice system should be on the shoulders of two film students." She added, "My knowledge at that time and now is that he brutally murdered this girl. True, he was wrongly convicted on a previous charge, and that's a miscarriage of justice too. But he killed Teresa Halbach."

The full interview with Stachowski will air Wednesday at 8 p.m. on HLN.
