12 Times Your BFF Is Better Than A Boyfriend

by Sadie Trombetta

Uteruses before duderuses, ovaries before brovaries, chicks before dicks — we all know and live by these amazing, pro-girl power sayings. But joking and clever Leslie Knope-inspired quips aside, there are certain times your best friend is a better partner than your boyfriend.

If you're in a serious relationship, then your boyfriend is likely the person you turn to in times of need. If you've had a rough day at work or you need advice about a big decision, you probably call your partner before anyone else, because that's what your boyfriend is there for — a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, and a person to support you, no matter what.

But long before your met your current boyfriend, and all the boyfriends before that, your best friend was the best partner of all. She was the voice on the other end of the phone when you needed someone to talk to in the middle of the night, and the sounding board you used to make some of your hardest life choices. Not to mention, your bestie was always your best partner in crime whenever you wanted a crazy night out. She was there for you before you got into a relationship, and she's still there for you now, because that's what best friends do.

No matter how perfect your significant other may be, here are 12 times your best friend was a way better partner than your boyfriend. You know what they say: besties before testes, for life.

1. When You Want Help Making A Career Decision

It's important to consider your boyfriend when you're making big decisions, but when it comes to your career, your best friend is the best person to turn to for advice. They'll be honest with you when you ask them if you should move across the country for a job, and you don't have to worry about your bestie's ulterior motives coloring their honest opinion about whether or not you should do it. They always want what's best for you, and they know your friendship will survive anything, including distance.

2. When You Want A Night Out On The Town

Your boyfriend is a great partner for date night and romantic getaways, but when you want to put your party dress on and dance the night away, there is only one person to call: your best friend. They're always ready to try some place new, they've perfected your karaoke duet, and they never say no to one more drink. Time to strap your dancing shoes on.

3. When You Need Unbiased Relationship Advice

You can talk to your boyfriend about anything — everything, that is, except your own relationship. If you need to vent about your boyfriend, your best friend is always there to listen, and they usually have some pretty good advice (or a glass of wine) to help ease your pain.

4. When You Need Sex Advice

In any healthy romantic relationship, you should be able to talk openly about sex, but there are certain topics you'd rather discuss with your BFF before your BF. You can ask them anything without feeling awkward or embarrassed, and they might even have a trick or two to share with you.

5. When You Want To Treat Yourself

Spa day with your best friend beats a spa day with your boyfriend, no questions asked. Your best friend will sip mimosas next to you while you get your nails done, and afterwards, they'll even go shopping with you. A guilt-free girls' day — could you ask for anything better?

6. When You Want To Try Something New

I love my boyfriend, but when I wanted to go sky diving or try aerial yoga, I wouldn't ask him on a date. Instead, I'd call up my best friend, because no matter how crazy my new idea is, I know she's always going to say yes. If you've ever gone sea kayaking or gotten an impromptu tattoo with your best friend, then you know exactly what I mean.

7. When You're Sick Or Hungover

In theory, it's romantic to have your partner care for you when you're sick, but do you really want them to watch you throw up all day long? I didn't think so. Your BFF, on the other hand, can hold your hair back, get you ginger ale and soup, and rub your back without you having to feel self-conscious. Aren't best friends, well, the best?

8. When You Need Help Picking Out An Outfit

If you have special occasion that requires the perfect outfit or a job interview you want to nail, your best friend makes a much better partner when it comes to picking out the right thing to wear. They know your personality, your style, and they aren't afraid to tell you when something doesn't look good. They'd rather be honest than spare your feelings, and you appreciate that.

9. When You're In A Fight With Your Parents

Any good boyfriend knows not to say anything bad about your parents, especially your mother, so when you're pissed off at your folks, you need your best friend's ear. She'll agree that your mom is acting crazy without being afraid to start an argument, but she'll also have solid advice on how to fix the problem, from one daughter to another.

10. When You're On Your Period

Want to wear sweatpants and sit on the couch, curled up in a ball, while watching Gilmore Girls? Call your BFF, because she knows how crappy your period can be, and she doesn't mind your complaining at all. Bonus: she always has a tampon when you need it — always.

11. When You Want To Take A Selfie

... or 50 selfies. While your boyfriend will inevitably roll his eyes when you reach for your phone on your date night, your best friend understands your need to not only document your time together, but perfect it.

12. When You Need Serious Life Advice

Boyfriends are great and all, but at the end of the day, no one is there for you like your best friend. They love you unconditionally, have your back no matter what you're faced with, and when you need some serious advice — whether it's about your love life, your career, your family, or anything else — they're always there for you. A best friend really is the best partner of them all.
