Kim K. Wrote An Inspiring Essay About Slut-Shaming

by Jordana Lipsitz

Unless you have been avoiding the Internet (and for that I commend you because sometimes a break is nice — but personally I have to know what color Kylie Jenner's hair color is at any given moment), you are likely aware that Kim Kardashian posted a very beautiful and very naked picture of herself on Instagram with the caption, "When you're like I have nothing to wear LOL." And, while I reacted with a very firm, I see you Kim, you jokester, of course you have something to wear, your closet is the size of my entire apartment, sadly, that's not the way a lot of the Internet reacted. Because haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, people jumped to social media to do just that — and ended up slut-shaming her in the process. However, because Kardashian is clearly a strong, confident woman whom we should all be inspired by, she responded in pretty much the best way possible: Kardashian wrote a great essay condemning slut-shaming on her website.

Considering it was released in conjunction with International Women's Day, it's that much more inspiring. In the essay, Kardashian slams those perceiving her as anything less than a woman who is comfortable and confident with her own sexuality, and urges other women to feel just as empowered despite what anyone else says: "I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world," she wrote.

It's great stuff. Here's a little sample of her inspiring piece:

... In all seriousness, I never understand why people get so bothered by what other people choose to do with their lives. [...] It always seems to come back around to my sex tape. Yes, a sex tape that was made 13 years ago. 13 YEARS AGO. Literally that lonnng ago. And people still want to talk about it?!?!

I lived through the embarrassment and fear, and decided to say who cares, do better, move on. I shouldn’t have to constantly be on the defense, listing off my accomplishments just to prove that I am more than something that happened 13 years ago.

Let’s move on, already. I have.

Words. Of. Wisdom. Kardashian continued:

I am empowered by my body. I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me. And I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world. [...] It’s 2016. The body-shaming and slut-shaming — it’s like, enough is enough. I will not live my life dictated by the issues you have with my sexuality. You be you and let me be me.

I am a mother. I am a wife, a sister, a daughter, an entrepreneur and I am allowed to be sexy.

You can read the whole essay over at Kardashian's website. And I don't know about you all, but I'm super inspired by her words and her pictures, because that sort of thing takes a level of confidence that we should all aspire to.

Anybody who still has something bad to say about Kardashian, please head to the back of the classroom. And stay there until you can get it together. After all, if you can't say anything nice, maybe you shouldn't say anything at all.
