Lorde Wants You To Stop Listening To Lorde

by Lia Beck

Lorde wants us to prepare for some new music, but I think her tactic might be off. Lorde thinks people should stop listening to her music so that they have a little Lorde-free time before her new songs come out. In an interview that will appear in V Magazine's March issue Lorde said, "I want to let people stop hearing Lorde on the radio all the time, because it’s kind of crazy at the moment. I’d like to give people a little bit of breathing room before I unleash something different." The idea of this makes sense. Lorde doesn't want people to be sick of her before they know more than one of her songs. That could put her firmly in one hit wonder territory and that's definitely something to be afraid of, especially if you're only 17 years old.

Unfortunately for Lorde, her wish isn't going to come true. "Royals" is all over the radio and it's likely to stay there for a while and that's not the only place the song pops up. It's on a million internet playlists, the video is on YouTube, and just the other day I heard a group of teenagers sing it in public. It also makes regular appearances in my shower singing rotation.

Lorde's music isn't going away right now and even if she thinks it needs to, she has no control over that. The real test for Lorde is whether or not she can put out more awesome songs. "Royals" has already embedded itself in our brains forever. She doesn't need to go away in order for us to want her back, she needs to prove herself. Winning two Grammys was a great start (and enough proof for many of us), but if she's still worried about one hit wonder status, then she needs a song that competes with "Royals" directly.
