Laila Ali's Tribute To Muhammad Ali

by Emily Shire

On Friday, boxing legend and political activist Muhammad Ali passed away at the age of 74. "After a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74 ... The Ali family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support and asks for privacy at this time," family spokesman Bob Gunnell said Friday. The three-time heavyweight champion was married four times and had nine children. Daughter Laila Ali followed in his footsteps and also became a professional boxer. As news broke that her father was hospitalized, Ali, 37, shared a deeply touching tribute to her father Friday, which also highlighted the impact he had specifically on her and her family.

While Ali was known for being one of the toughest in the ring and one of the most boldly outspoken outside of it, Laila Ali reminded the world of his softer side. On her Facebook page, Ali posted a photo of her father holding her daughter — his granddaughter — Sydney, captioned "I love this photo of my father and my daughter Sydney when she was a baby!" and added, "Thanks for all the love and well wishes. I feel your love and appreciate it!!" Ali also changed her Facebook profile picture to one of her standing with her famed father after winning the WBC/WIBA Super Middleweight title.

Laila Ali is the second youngest of Ali's nine children. Many of her siblings have shared touching sentiments about their beloved father on social media. Daughter Hani Ali tweeted, "Our father was a 'Humble Mountain!' And now he has gone home to God. God bless you daddy."

Ali's funeral will be held in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.
