This Sansa Storyline Would Be Perfect For 'GoT'

by Allie Gemmill

It's no secret to an avid Game of Thrones watcher that Sansa's arc during Season 6 wasn't quite the most exciting character arc the series has had to offer. As Sansa, Sophie Turner shone in her portrayal of a woman who has finally come into her ferocious own, after suffering at the hands of men she trusted. Sansa is arguably one of the most exciting women still alive and kicking in Westeros at the moment. The opportunities for her story to develop are plentiful in the final two seasons, especially considering she is now in a real position of power back at Winterfell. While we may only be getting 13 more episodes spread over the course of two seasons, there are still plenty of ways in which Sansa's story can surprise us — and one of the more intriguing ideas was posited by Turner herself. When interviewed recently by The Wrap's Steve Pond, she opened up about what she thought might make for another interesting event in Sansa's upcoming arc:

'That’s probably top of my list, is Arya and Sansa getting back together,' she said. 'I feel like it has to happen, but at the same time, if it did happen, would it be too obvious? Would it be too much of a good thing? Nothing that satisfactory happens on the show, because it’s ‘Game of Thrones,’ they want to make it dark and depressing and that’s what makes it amazing.'

Sansa and Arya not only reunited but also ruling together? Pinch me, I must be dreaming because this idea is too good to be true.

Since Game of Thrones is already fully embracing its new feminist direction, it might be a nice change to see the Starks not only continue to stay on top, but also for the Stark women to rule the family roost as a unit. Sansa and Jon went through absolute hell and back to reclaim their ancestral seat, so it should rightfully be up to Sansa and Arya to keep the wintry peace. It would also be awesome for the sisters to take up the tradition started by Lady Lyanna Mormont, the badass tween ruler of Bear Island. I mean, if Lyanna can rule with skill and aplomb, so can the Stark sisters. They've been apart for so long that being able to bond through co-rulership might be a way for them to start fresh.

It also makes sense that Sansa and Arya not only deserve to rule, but have also earned the skills through harrowing experiences to make them well equipped to rule. Both have endured serious mental and physical hardship; those are not the sole qualifications of what makes a good leader, per se, but it indicates in the world of Game of Thrones that both women would be more pragmatic, swift in justice and understanding then a male ruler might be.

Perhaps the most exciting reason this could all happen — Sansa and Arya ruling Winterfell together — is that there is strong evidence their brother-cousin, Jon Snow, will not be at Winterfell much longer. With Jon's parentage now all but verbally confirmed, there chances are high that he will be whisked away from a comfortable Northern roost and down towards King's Landing in a bid for either the Iron Throne or perhaps Daenerys' hand in marriage. That leaves Sansa and Arya ready to take over for him where he leaves off.

Now that Turner has planted this idea in my head, I really can't see any other way for events to unfold aside from Sansa and Arya ending up in their right places: ruling Winterfell with a no-nonsense attitude, united in sisterhood. It also means I can't wait for Season 7 to premiere ASAP.
