How 9/11 Was Remembered Around The World

As you've probably figured out by now, Sunday marked the 15th anniversary of the tragic attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. An understandably patriotic and somber day in the U.S., Americans gathered around the country to pay their respects to the men and women who lost their lives 15 years ago — but it wasn't just an American celebration. Rather, photos of 9/11 memorial services from Sunday show that the significance of the date was felt across the country and even around the world.

On Saturday, the New York City fire department (FDNY) held a memorial service at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio attended. As FDNY first responders processed into the cathedral, they carried 343 American flags, one for each member of the department who died on September 11.

Across the Atlantic Ocean, a memorial service was held at a historic church in Glasgow, Scotland, to mark the occasion. There, Muslim and Christian representatives — along with police officials — laid wreaths to show unity in the wake of the events 15 years ago. As the church's Revered Neil Galbraith reportedly said about the memorial service, "It is important to mark the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks because the worldwide consequences of that day have been immense."

Whether at home in the U.S. or abroad in a supportive country, the photos from 9/11 memorial services over the weekend show the unity that can come from such tragedy.
