11 Couples Costumes You Don't Need to Buy

by Rosie Narasaki

Have you gotten your Halloween costume together yet? Luckily, it's not too late, even if you want to get in on that elusive couples costume game — turns out, there actually a lot of couples costumes you don't even need to buy. We often think of them as something that takes a lot more planning — but you can make things easy on yourself (and your significant other) by shopping your own wardrobe.

Now, not everyone's going to happen to have every item of clothing on this list — the woman who has the perfect Jessica Jones jacket, might not have the perfect Scully suit, and the guy who has a dead ringer Bob Belcher apron might not be able to find a floor-dusting oversized coat, a la Christian Slater from Heathers just lying around his closet. Still, if you're in a bind this Halloween, have hope — and check out this list of couples costumes that you don't have to buy anything for. Halloween party costume contest glory and pop culture bragging rights might still be on the menu for you and your significant other, if you play your cards right. So, read on for some seriously relevant costume ideas!

1. Jessica Jones & Luke Cage From Jessica Jones

AKA the easiest couples costume ever. She lives in leather jackets, he lives in hoodies — perfect for keeping it low-key and comfy this Halloween.

2. Ron Weasley & Hermione Granger From Harry Potter

Got some bulky wool sweaters and the prerequisite ginger hair? Add in some vaguely wand-esque sticks, and you're good to go.

3. April Ludgate & Andy Dwyer From Parks & Recreation

For April, all you need is brightly colored clothes and a ton of eyeliner, and for Andy, all you need are some rumpled clothes and a labrador-esque attitude (and some stubble).

4. Veronica Sawyer & JD From Heathers

Take some '80s-ish fab-but-drab clothes in dark colors, and add some makeup special effects to make it look like you've just gotten into a fight to the death in the boiler room of your high school. Candy cigarettes make great props for this one.

5. Buffy & Angel From Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Got some vampire-fighting garb in your wardrobe? Just make sure you've got some witty repartee (for Buffy) and a sad pout (for Angel) ready to go.

6. Jane & Michael From Jane The Virgin

Pay homage to your favorite telenovela-inspired drama with this easy-to-pull off costume — just take a sunny floral dress and a simple dress shirt and khakis and you're totally good to go.

7. Mulder & Scully From The X-Files

Got some business-y suits (bonus points if you borrow your parents' old suits from the early '90s)? Now all you need is a skeptic and a wide-eyed believer — and some fake FBI badges printed from the Internet!

8. Kiki & Tombo From Kiki's Delivery Service

For her, all you need is a black dress and something to fashion into a red hair bow. For him, all you need is a red striped shirt and glasses. A black cat mascot and magical broom certainly wouldn't hurt either.

9. Nancy Wheeler & Steve Harington From Stranger Things

These '80s looks are fairly easy to throw together with whatever you happen to have in your closet. Key props might include a LOT of hairspray (for Steve, of course).

10. Bob & Linda Belcher From Bob's Burgers

So. Easy. The real trick to this one is pulling off their respective attitudes.

11. Clara & The Doctor From Doctor Who

The Doctor's new minimalist look lends itself well to last minute Halloween costumes. As for Clara's look, all you need is a cute floral dress, sensible boots, and a kicky leather jacket.
