7 Crazy Times People Came Back To Life

by Camille Bautista

Death is a difficult ordeal for any family, but the grieving process seems unimaginable when a person dies twice. On Wednesday, an appellate court gave a family the green light to proceed with a lawsuit claiming that a Los Angeles hospital froze a woman to death. Maria de Jesus Arroyo was pronounced dead in 2010 after suffering from a heart attack. After morticians received her body a few days later, they noted she was found face down with a broken nose and cuts and bruises to her face. The 80-year-old's husband and children sued the hospital saying the body had been mishandled after death, but it was later alleged that she suffered the injuries when she awoke while being frozen.

Yikes.

Court records say the now-deceased woman was hurt while struggling "unsuccessfully to escape her frozen tomb,” according to the Los Angeles Times. If it's true, this wouldn't be the first time a person has woken up post-mortem. Check out seven other crazy times people have come back from the dead.

South African Man Wakes Up In Morgue Fridge After Asthma Attack

In 2011, a South African man was presumed dead following an asthma attack. The morgue owner examined the man's body and claimed there was no pulse or heartbeat. Clearly, he was mistaken, as the "corpse" screamed for help from the morgue fridge 21 hours later.

Workers on shift at the time thought the sounds were coming from a ghost and ran for their lives. Doctors later declared him to be in stable condition and sent him home.

Grandma Comes Back From the Dead Twice, Spends Three Days in Morgue

This 61-year-old Russian woman embodies the word "resilient." From 2011 to 2012, Lyudmila Steblitskaya came back from the dead on two separate occasions. The first time, the hospital informed her daughter of her death, and the family proceeded to make funeral arrangements. When they went to pick up the body after three days in the morgue, workers informed them that Steblitskaya was actually still alive.

Daughter Anastasia told the Siberian Times, "Instead I started calling everyone, saying things like 'Er, sorry. Can you please stop digging the grave. Ah, is it done? OK... well, there won't be a funeral, my mother is alive.'"

In 2012, she had another "death" during a hospital stay. The second time around, doctors brought her back to life within hours.

Baby Kept in Freezer For 12 Hours, Cries At Mother's Touch

An Argentinian mother gave birth to a stillborn baby after going into premature labor six months into her pregnancy. She and her husband were unable to see or touch the baby's body before doctors took it away. The infant was kept in a refrigerated morgue and 12 hours after the birth, her parents insisted on visiting. Upon opening the drawer, the mother said she "felt" her child look at her. When she touched the newborn's hand, they realized the baby was alive — and it even let out a cry. Just try watching this without crying.

Neighbor Finds Woman Dead, Puts Her in Coffin...Finds Her Cooking

A Chinese woman climbed out of her coffin six days after she was found dead by a neighbor. The 95-year-old Li Xiufeng reportedly tripped and suffered a head injury at home, then was later discovered by a neighbor who tried to wake her up.

"No matter how hard I pushed her and called her name, she had no reactions," Chen Qingwang said.

Qinwang made preparations for her funeral, which included the tradition of keeping the coffin in the house for several days so friends and relatives could pay their respects. He didn't nail the coffin shut, and when he arrived at the home a day before the funeral, her body was gone.

He found Xiufeng was sitting in her kitchen, cooking a meal. She reportedly told villagers, “I slept for a long time. After waking up, I felt so hungry, and wanted to cook something to eat."

Man Wakes Up During Autopsy

Carlos Camejo, 33, woke up on the autopsy table as medical examiners were slicing into his face. "I woke up because the pain was unbearable," he told local Venezuelan newspaper El Universal.

The 33-year-old was pronounced dead after a highway accident. When he started bleeding during the autopsy, examiners knew something was wrong and stitched up the incision.

Dead Toddler Asks For Water During Funeral

Kelvin Santos, a two-year-old, shocked family and loved ones during his funeral when he sat up in his coffin and asked for a drink of water.

He initially died from complications of bronchial pneumonia at a hospital in Brazil, and was reportedly placed in an airtight body bag for three hours. During an open casket wake later in the day, his aunt said Kelvin appeared to move, then sat up and asked his dad for a drink.

Seconds later, however, the boy fell back down and was lifeless. After being rushed back to the hospital, he was pronounced dead, again. :(

Waiter Wakes Up At His Own Funeral

A funeral for Hamdi Hafez al-Nubi, a 28-year-old waiter in Egypt, turned into a celebration when he woke up at his own funeral. Al-Nubi was declared dead after suffering a heart attack while working. Relatives took him home and in Islamic tradition, and washed his body to prepare him for burial. When a doctor arrived to sign the death certificate, she found that his body was actually warm. Al-Nubi was revived, and so was his mother, who fainted after hearing the news.
