We need these 17 'If I Stay' Quotes in the Film

by Anna Klassen

John Green has had an excellent summer — his Vlogbrother YouTube channel is hotter than ever, two more of his novels will be turned into films, and his novel-to-big-screen adaptation, The Fault in Our Stars, has been devoured and beloved by audiences and critics alike. But now, it's Gayle Forman's turn. Her novel If I Stay , the New York Times Best Selling YA book is being turned into a film starring Chloe Grace Moretz.

Set in the real world, i.e., separate from the likes of Veronica Roth's Divergent series or Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games triology, If I Stay follows Mia Hall (Moretz) after a car accident that puts her in a coma. Mia has an out of body experience, and sees what her life would be like if she decides to wake up, or give in to an eternal sleep.

From the looks of the trailers, we can expect a similar bittersweet tone as The Fault in Our Stars, as both stories deal with life-threatening circumstances for teens, and young love. But as Bustle's own Rachel Simon points out, we shouldn't be quick to compare the two. Nevertheless, both adaptations stemmed from beloved YA novels, and while TFIOS stayed true to the prose its author penned, we hope If I Stay will do the same. Here are 17 of our favorite, most powerful and most romantic quotes we hope the film will include.

“And that's just it, isn't it? That's how we manage to survive the loss. Because love, it never dies, it never goes away, it never fades, so long as you hang on to it.”

"Love can make you immortal.”

“If you stay, I'll do whatever you want... maybe coming back to your old life would be too painful, that maybe it'd be easier for you to erase us. And that would suck, but I'd do it. I can lose you like that if I don't lose you today. I'll let you go. If you stay."

“Please Mia," he implores. "Don't make me write a song.”

“Girlfriend is such a stupid word. I couldn't stand calling her that. So, we had to get married, so I could call her 'wife.”

“But I'd understand if you chose love, Adam love, over music love. Either way you win. And either way you lose. What can I tell you? Love's a bitch.”

“She didn't care that people called her a bitch. 'It's just another word for feminist,' she told me with pride.”

"But the you who are tonight is the same you I was in love with yesterday, the same you I'll be in love with tomorrow. I love that you're fragile and tough, quiet and kick-ass."

"But I can't wrap my mind around the notion of you not getting old, having kids, going to Juilliard, getting to play that cello in front of a huge audience, so that they can get the chills the way I do every time I see you pick up your bow, every time I see you smile at me.”

“Then I smell the sweat on him, a clean musky scent that I'd bottle and wear as perfume if I could."

“I want you to play me like a cello.”

“I know that all the magic kisses in the world probably couldn't have helped him today. But I would do anything to have been able to give him one.”

“Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you.”

“But seventeen is an inconvenient time to fall in love.”

“Adam lay perfectly still, little groans escaping from his lips. I looked at the bow, looked at my hands, looked at Adam's face and felt this surge of love, lust, and an unfamiliar feeling of power.”

“I wasn't totally immune to the charms of the opposite sex, but I wasn't one of those romantic, swoony girls who had pink fluffy daydreams about falling in love.”

“Women can handle the worst kind of pain.”
