What Did Britney Think Of Their Copycat Look?

by Christine Cauthen

I love the VMAs and music awards shows in general. Naturally, Sunday night I was sitting on the edge of my seat as celebrities walked the red carpet. Ariana Grande looked sassy and cool in a black Moschino ensemble, and Miley stunned in a leather bandeau and high-top pants. Amber Rose was pretty shocking in her nearly nude frock, but the stars of the red carpet were definitely Katy Perry and her date, Riff Raff, paying homage to Britney and Justin circa the 2001 American Music Awards.

When the burnt orange Lamborghini rolled up to the red carpet I think almost everyone knew that something epic was about to go down. As soon as the doors opened and Katy was seen rocking a long denim patchwork dress with a sweetheart neckline, I think the world had a collective "YAAASSSSS" moment. For people who don't remember that fateful day in 2001 when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake (also known as the couple of the century, no big deal) debuted matching denim formalwear at the American Music Awards, I'm sorry, and I'm sure you were pretty confused last night.

Riff Raff joined Katy in a denim suit. The looks were slightly updated with gemstone accents and closer tailoring, but the inspiration was clear nonetheless.

If you were wondering what those that the look was modeled after were thinking, rest easy — Mama Britney loved it. Though there's yet to be a comment from Timberlake, Spears tweeted:

So what do you think? Did Perry and Riff Raff do Brit and JT justice? Are Katy and Riff Raff the new couple collaborating on more than just music (the duo just made a remix of "This Is How We Do")? One thing's for sure — they know how to respect their predecessors.
