How I Dyed My Hair Using My iPhone

by Tess Yocom

Changing my hair completely terrifies me. For seven years, I styled my locks the exact same way: chest length blonde hair, side part, one bobby pin. That’s it. Seriously — I felt completely out of my element without it pinned back. This summer, I finally mixed things up and got a bob. I was scared. I had no clue what it’d look like. But hey, it worked out for me. And now, with ModiFace's new iOS HairStudio app, you don't have to be nearly as nervous about taking big beauty plunges.

Changing your beloved hairstyle is like going skydiving: You sign up for it, freak out about it to everyone and anyone who will listen, and want to cry right before you take the (literal) leap. But the end result? Worth it.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to see what your hair would look like before you dye/cut/perm it? After all, pinning photos on a “hair inspiration” board on Pinterest can only do so much. Forget Jennifer Aniston and Lauren Conrad, don’t we all want to see what a new ‘do will look like on us? Because — you know — none of us will ever have locks as good as LC’s

Luckily, hair gods themselves invented an app to fix this little dilemma. And by hair gods, I mean the fine folks at ModiFace. Their new iOS app — appropriately named Hair Studio —lets users dye, volumize, reshape, and do pretty much anything imaginable to change their hair.

How does it work? It’s pretty simple. Take a selfie (or, if you’re having a really bad hair day, upload an old photo from your phone,) use the brush to apply a new color, and save. Bam. Completely new look.

My favorite feature was the dye button, which lets users swipe a brush over their hair and change color. Choose a brush size, how opaque you want your new hair, and swipe it over your locks! What’s even better is that you can change your color without redoing the entire process. Not feeling your new blonde look? Click a new color to change it right away!

The shine button is a good way to polish your locks without making a huge change. It works the same way as the dye brush. This may or may not be my new secret weapon before I post selfies. Shhh.

Still want more? Update to the premium version for $1.99 to add highlights, lowlights and pretty much any color on the rainbow. Go green (literally) without setting foot in a salon.

As with any app, there are a few glitches. The volume brush doesn’t make much of a difference, so it’s not even worth using. It’s also hard to get your entire face in a photo. The app crops pictures, so you won’t be able to see the top of your head a lot of time. I also couldn't figure out how to use the volume and flatten features, so I mainly stuck with the dye and shine.

Now, the ultimate test. Would anyone actually believe that I changed my hair? I dyed my hair brown and — naturally — sent a photo to my Mom. Her response? “I like it! What’s the story?” Looks like the app is mother approved.

Hair Studio is basically the solution for all of our hair needs. Scared of making changes? Luckily, there is an app for that.
