6 Reasons To Wear Socks With Heels

by Hayli Goode

My mother used to tell me to never date a guy who was wearing socks with sandals (usually on days my father would go out in public with socks and sandals before we could stop him). Well, times, it seems, they are a-changin'. With cold weather covering most of the country, wearing socks with heels are proving to be a totally acceptable trend.

There is definitely some hypocrisy here. Socks with sandals will most likely never be an OK thing to wear, in my opinon. Or I really hope not. But we're seeing more and more socks with heels in celeb's normcore outfits, and it's a trend that's quickly being adopted by us, well, normals.

This week, most of the country dipped into double digit below freezing wind chills. And, like everyone else, I'm willing to do almost anything to stay warm if I am I forced to leave my Snuggie draped over the couch. I think that's where the silver lining comes in: It's definitely acceptable to wear socks with heels when the temps dip below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. I know, I know. Your counter argument here could be "boots." But where's the fun in that?

When you're forced emerge from your blanket fort and put the cocoa down for a work party or a nice night out, here are some tips of how to pair socks with your heels without looking like a total fool.

1. With Loose Socks

Not only do these look super chic, but they're wool socks. Otherwise known as the only socks you can wear in -49390407 degree weather and your feet will still sweat. The key to rocking this look is to buy a pair that are too big for your feet and pull them down a bit to look loose, for that comfortable-but-still-put-together vibe. Another tip: tights plus a shorter dress will complete the look.

2. With Statement-Making Details

Sometimes shoes are the statement pieces for an ensemble, and your socks can just add to the effect. Just make sure to stick to similar color themes, since they're right next to each other.

3. With Jeans

I think I gasped when I saw this. I love the look of heels with jeans, but I typically choose boots in the winter because that little sliver of ankle gives me the literal chills. Thanks, socks for saving the day. I'm also typically a fan of all neutrals, but I'm feeling quite inspired by this pop of purple.

4. With Ruffles

Ruffle-y socks with sneakers still give off a Kindergarten vibe to me, but ruffle-y socks with major heels? Completely acceptable for adults — encouraged, even.

5. With Patterns

These might be a bit sheer for truly freezing temps, but if your winter weather tends to stay up in the 40s or 50s, then by all means try the trend with thinner socks. Compliment colorblocked heels with wild patterned socks in the same set of shades.

6. And For Any Excuse To Wear Cats

After I found this, I bought a pair for my cat-obsessed friend (also myself). Adding another layer to your outfit is just one more chance to express yourself and what you love. Maybe you're not daring enough to wear cat socks just yet, but take this opportunity to develop more of your personal style.
