Will A 'Sharp Objects' Movie Happen?

by Kaitlin Reilly

If your idea of good read is a novel that keeps you guessing until the very last page, then Gillian Flynn is the contemporary author you should be reading. Not that you don't know that — the adaptation of Flynn's 2012 novel Gone Girl seemed to be all moviegoers discussed for months, and her second novel, Dark Places, has a film version of its own coming our way this year. Flynn's debut novel Sharp Objects is the only published novel on the list to be adapted, leaving Flynn fans wondering just when they'll see a big screen version. The answer? They won't... but that doesn't mean it won't be adapted. Instead, Sharp Objects won't be a film, but a television series instead — and it could be an awesome one.

So what is Sharp Objects the novel about? It's a particularly creepy tale, even for a Flynn novel: The book follows Camille, a journalist who returns to her hometown of Wind Gap in order to investigate the brutal murder of a young girl. While in town she connects with her half-sister while uncovering dark secrets about the town and her own family, and confronts the past that has caused Camille to self-harm by etching cruel words into her skin.

Camille is a fascinating narrator, a damaged heroine, and, in Flynn's own words, "not a nice little girl." This is a woman that many actresses should long to play, but who is capable of taking her to the small screen is an entirely different story. Here's a few actresses that might be able to do the role justice:

Chloe Sevigny

So what if Those Who Kill didn't exactly work out for Sevigny? As we know from her role on American Horror Story: Asylum, the woman can do dark material. She could use a strong female character to showcase her talents.

Troian Bellisario

Obviously I wouldn't want any show taking Bellisario off her Pretty Little Liars A game, but if Sharp Objects does get pushed back to a time when the actress can jump onto a new series, casting should consider her a viable option. She's already an expert sleuth and any PLL fan knows she can do a mental breakdown better than anyone.

Alison Lohman

Lohman actually hasn't made a movie since Gamer in 2009, the same year as her iconic performance in Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell. Assuming she hasn't quit the industry forever, producers should keep an eye on Lohman for the role — her performance in the adaptation of White Oleander was heart-wrenching and contains similar themes to that of Sharp Objects.

Kate Mara

I think Mara would be great for the role. She's already played a scrappy journalist on House of Cards, and it's not like she's going to make it back on that show any time soon. There's a bit of an edge to Mara that you don't find in many young actresses, and it's exactly what Camille needs. If she's not available, her sister Rooney wouldn't be a bad fit either.
