Doctor Discusses Harrison Ford Plane Crash

by Kadeen Griffiths

This story might have had a happy ending, but that doesn't mean it is any less terrifying. On Thursday night, the world received word that actor Harrison Ford was injured in a plane crash — as the pilot, no less! He's reported to be suffering from head injuries, and was confirmed to be fine though "battered" by his son, Ben Ford, but new details about the incident continue to come to light. Although Ford was an experienced pilot, a malfunction led to his plane coming down in Venice, California — on a golf course where, luckily, a doctor happened to be playing a game. According to the doctor who helped Ford at the site of the crash, the incident was even more terrifying than we thought.

"A passenger in the rear seat slumped over in distress belted in. I could smell fuel," said Sanjay Khurana, a spine surgeon who rushed to Ford's aid when the plane crashed. "We wanted to get him out safely and with the fuel leaking out, I motioned to some of the other folks at the golf course to put dirt on the fuel so it wouldn’t combust. I just wanted to get him out safely so that the situation wouldn’t erupt into a fire."

The idea that the plane crash could have turned out even more horrific than it did if that fuel had combusted is a truly staggering thought. Thankfully, Ford should be recovering well at the hospital, and we are just left with the sad thought that it could have been a lot worse. Further details about the flight, the crash, and Ford's recovery continue to be revealed, but at least we can take comfort in the statement from Ford's representative:

“Harrison was flying a WW2 vintage plane today which stalled upon take off. He had no other choice but to make an emergency landing, which he did safely,” his rep tells JustJared.com. “He was banged up and is in the hospital receiving medical care. The injuries sustained are not life threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery.”
