You Can Dress Like Oliva Pope Even If You're +Size

by Jodie Layne

I'm pretty sure that all of us have celebrities whose styles we lust over or TV shows whose costumers create characters that we want to channel a little bit of in our own lives. It's not an uncommon phenomenon — there are even whole websites dedicated to helping you dress in the exact same clothes that our TV closet-crushes or badass babes wear. They're generally pretty helpful — except when you're plus-size and none of the actual pieces the characters are wearing come in your size.

I can't count the amount of times I've said, "I wish I could dress like a fat Olivia Pope!" or "Someone make me a fat girl version of Corrin Tucker's wardrobe immediately." I know that I am definitely not alone, though, so I'm making it my mission to help you dress like your favorite celebs and TV characters in this new recurring feature called "So You Wanna Dress Like a Fat ____." These articles will be both an effort to increase the positive use of the word fat as a self-identifier and to give fat babes the same access to fashion that their straight-size counterparts have. First up is my endless source of coat-spiration — one of the chicest women on primetime TV, and one of the strongest characters on TV period. She's Scandal's Olivia Pope and you can actually get her look quite easily with a little bit of clever clicking around on the internet and a few online purchases. The look that she's been sporting in recent episodes is wintry, but the perfect spring transition wardrobe for those of us in colder climates. Liv dresses so true to her character: No messing around, she's elegantly glamorous. She looks good, but gets the job done and there's nothing she can't get handle.

Her staples? For when she's at work and fixing everyone else's messes, she exudes power in sharp, well-tailored basics: Silky blouses, straight-leg pants, pumps, structured bags, leather gloves, and a minimalist wool coat. Her off-duty casual look is a lot more laid-back with drape-y knitwear, chunky-knit sweaters, great denim, long necklaces, and ankle booties — because Olivia Pope looks polished at all times.
