Good News, 'Brothers Grimm' Fans

by Kaitlin Reilly

The world may be getting another fairytale series: According to reports, The Ring screenwriter Ehren Kruger will adapt Terry Gilliam's 2005 adventure film The Brothers Grimm into a TV show. The film, which starred Matt Damon and Heath Ledger as the titular brothers, followed the two men as they uncovered that the folklore passed down from generation to generation was based on real supernatural happenings.

But, if you think this series will be anything like the light-hearted Disney live-action adaptation of Cinderella or even the ABC series Once Upon A Time, think again — this fairytale-centric TV series is guaranteed to be dark, just like the original stories are. As Kruger commented in a statement about the show, according to Deadline:

The original stories the Brothers set out to collect were not for the faint of heart and we’ll be making a show that gets back to those origins and their cautionary, scary, thrilling spirit.

Grimm's fairytales are definitely not for the faint of heart, even if the media tends to water them down a bit so that they don't freak children — and, okay, some adults — out. You may think you know fairytales like Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel, but you probably don't know some of their more disturbing elements: the ones that are conveniently wiped clean in our modern-day versions.

Here are the plot points that will keep you up and night... and might make their way into the new show.

Cinderella's stepsisters get their eyes pecked out by birds as punishment.

From: Cinderella

Think that the birds are just for helping Cinderella get dressed in the morning? Nope — they also seek vengeance.

...But not before they cut off their heels to fit into the glass slipper.

Oh the price we pay for fashion.

Rapunzel's prince is blinded by thorns.

From: Rapunzel

He falls from the tower and lands on the thorns EYES FIRST. The horror!

The Evil Queen wants to eat Snow White's liver and heart.

From: Little Snow-White

And, actually, she thinks she does — she doesn't know that the huntsman killed a boar in order to give the queen Snow White's "organs." The queen delights in her own cannibalism.

The Princess breaks the spell by throwing the frog against the wall.

From: The Frog King .

You know what they say — you have to throw a lot of frogs violently against a wall until you meet your prince. Hey, at least no one's cutting off their feet, though.
