7 Roles Kiernan Shipka Should Take On Next

by Loretta Donelan

Kiernan Shipka, like many of the other hugely talented stars of Mad Men, now has a lot more time on her hands. Though she is totally entitled to do things like get friendship bracelets and ride her scooter, I'm also really hoping that we'll be seeing more of her on film and TV. Though she has a couple upcoming movies in post-production, and she has already done way more than any 15-year-old should be expected to do, her schedule at this moment looks pretty clear — leading me to consider what Kiernan Shipka will do after Mad Men now that the series has wrapped filming.

Shipka has frequently been compared to Chloë Grace Moretz. This is accurate, as both young ladies seem intelligent with a badass streak — plus, Shipka's turn on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt did seem reminiscent of Moretz's awesome role on 30 Rock back in the day. Keeping in mind Moretz's career trajectory, as well as that of other child stars, it's easy to see where Shipka should set her sights next.

After all, Shipka already has powerful friends, from her celebrity BFFs to her admiring Mad Men co-stars — and anyone who has seen her on Mad Men knows that she is a talented actress. With the world at her fingertips, here are some suggestions for where she should go next.

Do a play.

I feel like there are lots of great stage roles for young girls in mature plays. Like Daniel Radcliffe before her, it would be a good way for her to show that she is serious about acting.

Go for high-brow horror.

Yes, Shipka has already done a horror film — however, if she associates herself with a big name horror or thriller flick, like Moretz in Carrie (however poorly that remake was received, Moretz still got to work with Julianne Moore), she'll likely draw the attention of the public without ruining her reputation as a serious actress.

Guest-star on a respected TV show.

Hopefully, this season won't be the last we'll see of her as Kymmi on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Appearing in roles on similarly well-regarded shows would be a way for her to show off her comedic and dramatic talents, and a way for the show runners to capitalize on her Mad Men star power. An appearance on Better Call Saul , maybe?

Do a David O. Russell or Wes Anderson film.

I can see her working well with the signature style of both directors, Russell in particular, and both directors are known for fostering young talent.

Go for a literary sci-fi adaptation.

Less Divergent, more A Wrinkle In Time. In fact, that latter movie is being made, and there haven't been any casting decision announcements. Kiernan Shipka for Meg, please!

Voice a Pixar character.

Shipka has already done voice work in Legend of Korra — and who doesn't love a Pixar movie?

Do a cute indie film.

Like Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence, and Abigail Breslin — as well as so many others — festival attention could be a good way for Shipka to establish herself as a movie actress.
