Andreja Pejic May Be In 'Vogue' Next Month

by Arielle Dachille

This is shaping up to be a big year for ethereal creature and transgender supermodel Andreja Pejic. In 2014, Pejic came out as a transgender woman, and earlier on this year, she made her triumphant return to the catwalk. She's also filming a documentary about her transition. Now, word on the street is that Andreja Pejic will star in a Vogue editorial in the upcoming issue of the magazine. If this turns out to be true, it's definitely a groundbreaking moment.

According to a tipster on a Fashion Spot forum, Pejic will supposedly star in a four-page spread shot by fashion photography legend Patrick Demarchelier in the May 2015 issue. In what would be her third Vogue cover story, Wintour's girl Carey Mulligan is reported to be the cover girl. So nothing too unexpected there.

For Pejic and the trans community, on the other hand, a four-page spread would be a huge deal. If this news is true, this will mark Pejic's first appearance in American Vogue. Before she underwent Gender Reassignment Surgery last July, Pejic had appeared in Vogue Italia, Vogue Turkey, covered French Vogue, commanded a solo story in Vogue Korea, and posed nude in Vogue Brazil. Since she emerged on the scene, Pejic has been widely sought after for her gorgeous look. But her rumored May solo spread, however, would be her first Vogue appearance since she has come out as trans.

The fashion bible has featured trans models in the past. April Ashley, the first trans woman to appear in American Vogue , graced its pages back in the early '60s. It's worth saying though, at the time, her gender identity was kept a secret. Today, transgender models are breaking serious ground. In addition to Pejic, models Lea T (Givenchy creative director Ricardo Tisci's muse), Isis King (the first trans woman to appear on ANTM ), Ines Loan- Rau (shot for Vogue Italia, Playboy, among others), and Carmen Carrera (who was shot by Stephen Meisel for W Magazine ) are among some of the prominent transgender models who are making serious waves in fashion.

Until the images from the upcoming issue are released, we'll have to be on the lookout. If this news is indeed legit, that would be fantastic. The more often trans bodies are shown as beautiful, the lesser the stigma around trans identity.
