Johnny Weir's Hat Wins The Kentucky Derby

by Erin Mayer

The Kentucky Derby is all about hats, hats, hats and also booze, booze, booze. Sure, maybe SOME people care about which horse wins the race, but I can't imagine why when we have fabulous creations like Johnny Weir's boozy Kentucky Derby Hat to keep us occupied. And you thought the feathered concoction he wore last year was good!

Weir, a former figure skater and two time Derby host, hit the red carpet earlier today alongside co-host (and fellow former figure skater) Tara Lipinski wearing an iridescent matching gold top and pants (a little more pajama-dressing that suit-dressing, if you ask me). But the real showstopper was his fabulous headpiece. A bouffant of red roses and green leaves would have been statement enough, but Weir took it a step further. Yup, his hat features a tasty-looking cocktail buried among the flora, complete with ice cubes! Given the color of the "booze" and the presence of a leafy green garnish, it looks to be a mint julep. That only makes sense, given that mint juleps are basically the official drink of the Kentucky Derby.

So I wouldn't exactly recommend wearing this statement piece out and about, but it totally works for an event that prides itself on outrageous fashion.

No matter which horse takes home the title this evening, I think we can all agree that Johnny Weir is the real winner of the 2015 Kentucky Derby.
