Hear Maroon 5's Catchy (But Strange) New Single

by Alex Kritselis

This song's probably going to be everywhere this summer: On Friday, Maroon 5 premiered their new single, "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" (a.k.a. "This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like A Motherf****r"), and it's incredibly catchy... but its lyrics are pretty strange. The track finds Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine singing about a beautiful woman whom he sees partying it up all over town. Though he notes that she's not the brightest bulb in the box, he's still drawn to her. Here's the first verse, pre-chorus, and chorus:

Her body’s hot

Her body’s like the summer

I’m in a trance or something

Her mind is not, no

As sharp as all her diamonds

She might be smoking something

I see her dancing in the streets

Sipping champagne on the beach

So expensive when she eats

‘Cause she’s so fancy

I see her when I go to sleep

I check my phone when I am weak

She never posts anything deep

‘Cause she’s so fancy

This summer’s gonna hurt like a motherf***er, f***er

This summer’s gonna hurt like a motherf***er, f***er

I guess the chorus is Levine's way of lamenting the fact that he's inevitably going to end up spending all of his time and money on this woman over the summer, even though she kinda sucks? "She wants it all/She's always taking something/And now I'm left with nothing," he sings on the track's second verse. He tries to break off their relationship, but there's just something about her that always brings him back. I think that's what's happening here, anyway. I'm not entirely sure. Admittedly, straight men baffle me sometimes.

Speaking of straight men, they're definitely the target audience for the "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" lyric video: it's just a montage of people falling down and hurting themselves. Woo, summer! Check it out below.

Both the clean and explicit versions of "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" are available on iTunes now.
