Kylie Jenner's Twitter Gaffe Is Made of Ignorance

by Alanna Bennett

Welp, one member of the Kardashian clan is definitely fielding some angry tweets right about now: Kylie Jenner tweeted calling herself "bipolar," but she didn't seem to mean it as a shocking confession-type thing so much as she did as a "hahaha, let's trivialize a mental disorder" type thing.

"I miss my black hair I'm so bipolar :(" Jenner tweeted earlier today, accompanied by a photo (you can see it and the tweet below) of that aforementioned black hair. So, you know, ragingly tacky and also kind of infuriating in its ignorance.

It should be noted that Jenner, the youngest of the Kardashian empire, is 16 — which is not an excuse by any means, especially when one is a public figure. But also, think back to some of the stuff you said when you were 16, and I guarantee some of it was incredibly dumb, no matter how intelligent and well-rounded and grown-up you were then or are now. What Jenner said — and more specifically how casually she said it — actually says a lot more about (bout to get lofty here) the world that we live in than it does Jenner herself. She's a 16-year-old, and often what teenagers say is very much a parroting of the politics they observe elsewhere. Ignorance is infuriating, absolutely, and it should be pointed out; it's also often the symptom of a much larger problem. The stigmatization and general lack of knowledge and/or discourse surrounding mental illness is, after all, a pretty huge issue, especially in the U.S. — it's not just Kylie who has a lot to learn.Any which way, Kylie is likely getting a big ol' talk from her mom tonight about the family's PR.
