Bethenny Gives An Unpleasant Surprise On 'RHONY'

by Laura Rosenfeld

One of the major themes of Season 7 of The Real Housewives of New York City has been Bethenny Frankel's reluctance to join in with the other Housewives. Many of them complained that it didn't really seem like Bethenny was making an effort to try to get to know them and be friends with them. The fact that she wasn't going to attend Dorinda Medley's birthday weekend in the Berkshires wasn't going to help any. But lo and behold, Bethenny surprised everyone by showing up to the party, although with what happened next, it probably would have been better if she never came at all.

When Bethenny arrived at Dorinda's home in the Berkshires unannounced, everyone was happy to see her. Everyone except Heather Thomson, that is. Heather has complained the most about Bethenny this season, hands down. Although I initially imagined these two hitting it off since they're both strong, fierce entrepreneurs, every interaction between them has been awkward, strange, and tense.

Dorinda's birthday dinner in the Berkshires was no different. From the moment Bethenny walked in the house, Heather looked like she had a bad taste in her mouth. This only got worse when Heather essentially tried to mother Bethenny by making sure she had food to eat and seeing what was up with her fidgeting in her chair and, disrupting the conversation everyone else was having with Ramona Singer's date and business partner Peter Guimaraes. Just before the dinner, Carole Radziwill had discovered a Radar Online article that said Peter had locked lips with Mario's alleged mistress, and seeing as how she wasn't ready to tell Ramona about it, she was probably glad that Bethenny took some attention off of this dude at least.

But back to the Heather and Bethenny brawl. Heather told Bethenny to lighten up. Bethenny told Heather to back off, and the evening ended with the two in tears. Well, at least what we got to see of it before those dreaded words "To Be Continued" popped up on the screen before the show was over.

From what I can tell, Heather is just trying so hard to be Bethenny's friend. She even seems to be all up in her business more so than she has been with any of the other Housewives. I don't know exactly why this is. Maybe it's because she is intrigued by the challenge of getting Bethenny to open up. Maybe it's because she admires Bethenny so much that she just really wants her to like her. Or maybe she just saw this as her in to stay relevant on RHONY since she doesn't seem to be getting much screen time this season.

Whatever the reason, being so overbearing is the exact opposite way to Bethenny's heart. In addition to the personal turmoil Bethenny is experiencing right now, she has also just had an incredibly difficult upbringing filled with abuse and the lack of a maternal figure. For that reason, Bethenny has become an intensely independent and obstinate person. It's no wonder that Heather's mothering would repel her so.

Judging by the preview for next Tuesday night's episode, it doesn't look like things are going to get any better between them — or Bethenny and any of the other Housewives for that matter.
