21 Movies Coming To Netflix In September That You Missed In Theaters & Need To See

When you're looking for something to watch on Netflix, one of the common quests is to find something that you've never seen before. If there's a movie that you just never got around to seeing in theaters, streaming services offer a stress-free second chance — more so, I think, than going to the video store like we used to do in the olden days. Luckily, there will be plenty of recently released movies on Netflix in September that should allow you to get caught up on the hidden gems that you may have missed or forgotten about.
There is plenty to be excited about when it comes to Netflix this fall. Luke Cage is finally premiering. All of the Jaws films are about to drop, along with other '80s and '90s favorites like the original Footloose, Saving Private Ryan, Top Gun, and Practical Magic.
However, if you're the kind of person who says "eh, I'll catch it on Netflix" about a new release — you're going to have to make good on that promise now. Here are some of the films arriving in September that you may have accidentally missed over the last 10 or so years.
1. The Finest Hours
Last winter's movie season was chock full of blockbusters, and this "Chris Pine Versus The Sea" picture may have passed you by — but don't fear!
Available Sept. 6
2. Joyful Noise
If you recently discovered Jeremy Jordan on Supergirl, this movie is a great way to dive into some of his other work that you may have missed. Plus, it's Queen Latifah and Keke Palmer and Dolly freakin' Parton. What's not to love?
Available Sept. 1
3. Last Holiday
To complete your Queen Latifah Netflix double feature, there's always this decadent Christmas classic.
Available Sept. 1
4. Burn, Burn, Burn
Definitely an under-the-radar film, this road comedy stars Laura Carmichal from Downton Abbey and Joe Dempsie from Skins and Game of Thrones.
Available Sept. 1
5. Full Out
If you're already missing the Olympics, check out this gymnastics flick that stars Ana Golja from Degrassi: Next Class!
Available Sept. 1
6. Zootopia
If you missed this Disney charmer, get on it. It's message about tolerance makes it practically required reading, and I'm so thrilled that it's going to be so easily accessible on Netflix.
Available Sept. 20
7. London Has Fallen
In case you missed out on the Olympus Has Fallen sequel, now's your chance.
Available Sept. 13
8. 3 Days To Kill
I know there have got to be some McG fans out there who will be pleased to see this thriller starring Amber Heard, Kevin Costner, and Hailee Steinfeld.
Available Sept. 17
9. The Imitation Game
Sometimes I pretend to have seen more Academy Award contenders than I actually have. The Imitation Game may or may not have been one of those.
Available Sept. 28
10. The Wicker Man
We all experience our Nicholas Cage moments at different times. If you didn't catch this in theaters circa 2006, Netflix has your back.
Available Sept. 1
11. Hoot
Unless you're a big Luke Wilson fan, I have a hunch that you missed Hoot. It's definitely worth watching on Netflix — check out young Logan Lerman and Brie Larson!
Available Sept. 1
12. Babel
Another Oscar winner (from today's most acclaimed directed Alejandro Iñárritu) that I skipped in theaters pretended to know more about than I did. Can't wait to finally give it a watch!
Available Sept. 1
13. Sample This
If you're loving The Get Down on Netflix right now, you might want to check out this 2012 documentary about some forgotten hiphop history.
Available Sept. 15
14. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
If you're the type of person who thinks that musicals are all cheery and lacking subtlety, definitely watch this 2007 adaptation of Sondheim's classic downer.
Available Sept. 1
16. Bratz: The Movie
I missed this in theaters so bad, I assumed it was animated. Maybe some kids who grew up with Bratz instead of Barbies would be interested.
Available Sept. 1
17. Defiance
Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, and Jamie Bell as Jewish brothers in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe? How did I miss this?!
Available Sept. 1
18. Man On Wire
Remember that Joseph Gordon-Levitt movie about the tightrope walker? This Academy Award-winning 2008 documentary tells the true story of Phillipe Petit.
Available Sept. 1
19. The Amnityville Horror
Bet you didn't know that Ryan Reynolds and Chloë Moretz were in a horror movie together? (You couldn't drag me to a horror movie, so maybe you did.)
Available Sept. 1
20. River
This thriller, set in Laos, got a lot of acclaim from film festivals. If the classic indie "limited release" doesn't reach you, this might be worth a look.
Available Sept. 24
21. Stomp The Yard
Look, don't be ashamed. I don't know what your life was in 2007. Maybe this dance movie classic slipped you by. Netflix can help you remedy that. I know marathoning shows and Netflix originals has become more popular with the streaming series, but it's still a great place to watch a film that you, for whatever reason, never got a chance to see.
Available Sept. 1
