How To Rock Jewel Tones All Winter Long

by Jillian Ruffo

When winter rolls in, it’s so easy to throw on a chunky sweater, hide under layers of black eyeshadow, and go into hibernation. Yes, it's predictable, but we call that a "comfort zone" for a reason. This year, before we reached for our usual smudgy liner and charcoal shadow, we wanted to try a better — and so much less basic — approach to winter beauty. With that in mind, we worked with YouTube extraordinaire Deepica Mutyala to show you how to ditch your smoky eye and winged liner in favor of vibrant, jewel-toned shades.

With three palettes to explore — violet, ruby, and navy — Deepica’s usually simple winter look adopted the bold, deep hues that feel as safe as blacks and browns, but instead add a touch of richness into the mix that neutrals just can’t match. The best part? They’re versatile and buildable, so you can wear them anywhere. Just swipe on a pale purple shadow for work and amp it up with amethyst in your crease, or turn one coat of a berry lip stain into a vampy wine for a night out.

In partnership with COVERGIRL, here are three bold looks that will take you out of your winter rut immediately — because shades of gray aren't adding any life into your wintry mix.

Violet Lids

The tools:

Beginning with a swipe of pale pink (shade 1) all over your lid, build up the color by adding pale violet (2) and silvery purple (3) until you reach your desired richness. Then, darken the crease with a deep indigo (4). Finish it off with a smudge of purple liner on your top and bottom lash lines and a pop of fuchsia on your lips.

Wine-Stained Lips

The tools:

In a rush? This look is your new BFF. Brush a neutral shadow all over your lids, and use a volumizing mascara to make your lashes pop. Then, make your lips the center of attention by swiping on a wine-colored lipstick.

Peacock Smoky Eyes

The tools:

Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner in Midnight Blue, Eyeshadow Quad in Breathtaking Blues, The Super Sizer By Lash Blast Mascara, all by COVERGIRL

Swap out your gray shades for blues for an instant pick-me-up. Start with one coat each pearly white (1) and pale silver (2) all over your lids. Add a dab of the silver to your inner corners. Then, add a heavy layer of deep turquoise (3) all over your lid, and a shimmery navy (4) in your crease, blending it outwards. Line your top and bottom lash lines with navy liner, and finish with mascara.
