Miley Disses Beyonce... Or Does She?

by Kristie Rohwedder

Thursday, a new Miley Cyrus story took the Internet by storm… for a hot minute. Perez Hilton posted some "quotes" leaked from Love magazine's new interview with Cyrus, and they are ICKY. But also? So fishy. In the "interview," Cyrus allegedly says she's "the best" and declares herself the heir to the Beyoncé throne: "As Beyoncé grows in motherhood and all the crap it does to your body, it will create a vacuum for fresh young faces to rise up and no one else can properly fill that void right now. I'm the only white female singer that could fill that slot right now and do it right, you know?" Um. Excuse me? I thought. Did she really just say that? Am I about to fly off the handle?

But before I could flip my lid, I noticed the faint scent of Eau de Fabricated in the air. I called shenanigans. The interview is just TOO SKETCHY. Yes, Cyrus has said some offensive crap before, but this? This kind of feels out of character. It doesn't sound like our Miley.

Shortly after the story nearly caused the world to spin off of its axis, Cyrus tweeted that the quote was "MADE UP" and that she is "making the liar retract the statement. U can cause ALOT [sic] of drama but NOT between me & B!"

You tell 'em Miley.

When I read the excerpts from the Love interview, I immediately tried to recall any instance Cyrus bad-mouthed another star. The only thing I could think of was Cyrus's tasteless response to Sinead O'Connor's open letters. But what about a time she has said anything, positive or negative, about another celeb at all? A handful of unremarkable examples came to mind. It seems as though every star has an opinion regarding Cyrus, but Cyrus isn't really one to gossip about other famous folk. Funny how that works.

Here are some of Cyrus's more notable quotes about fellow celebs (SPOILER ALERT: They aren't nearly as aggressive or out of touch or awful as the fake stuff printed in the Love interview. Some of them are actually very sweet. *GASP*):

About Justin Bieber:

He's trying really hard. People don't take him seriously, but he really can play the drums, he really can play guitar, he really can sing. I just don't want to see him fuck that up, to where people think he's Vanilla Ice. I tell him that. Like, ‘You don't want to become a joke. When you go out, don't start shit. Don't come in shirtless.’ But the thing is, I think boys are, like, seven years behind. So in his head, he's really, like, 12.

It's a flawed statement, but the intention is good. She's being nice about ol' Biebs!

About Joe Jonas:

We were so young that it’s actually like, 'How did you get peer pressured by me?'

This is a response to Jonas's comments. Cyrus's response isn't cruel or rude. It's just funny.

About Radiohead:

When she tried to set up a backstage meet and greet with Radiohead, she was turned down. "I left 'cause I was so upset. I wasn't going to watch," Cyrus told radio hosts Johnjay and Rich. "Stinkin' Radiohead! I'm gonna ruin them, I'm going to tell everyone."

She's kidding. This is a non-thing. I said something along those lines when the In-N-Out Burger by my apartment closed an hour earlier than I expected. Everyone says words they don't mean when things don't go their way. I still love In-N-Out Burger, and I'm sure she still loves Radiohead.

About Ariana Grande:

I was backstage with [the rising pop star] Ariana Grande. I’m like, 'Walk out with me right now and get this picture, and this will be the best thing that happens to you, because just you associating with me makes you a little less sweet' ... She’s trying. I see her wearing the shorter things. She comes in, and she goes, 'This made me feel like you.' And I’m like, 'That was like my sixth grade prom dress.' She’s, I think, still on Nickelodeon. She has people that she has to kind of respect.

I've seen this referred to as "a diss," but come on. It's not a diss. I don't read this as a "Cyrus wants Grande to change" statement. It's a commentary on the pop star industry.

About Britney Spears:

Everyone goes through a time in their life where they don’t want their picture taken everyday. She just never had that time where she could say 'I’m going through something right now and need to shut down' ... I also don’t have that, so it’s good to have that one person in my life who gets it.

Awwww.

See? Cyrus dishes out some stuff, but nothing too wild. Nothing that'd make me consider believing she'd say "[Beyoncé]'s been out for such a long time," that's for sure.
