Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Win A Big EMAs Award

by Caitlin Flynn

During an eventful evening in Milan, Hailey Baldwin, Bianca Balti, and Tinie Tempah presented one of the biggest awards of the night — and the crowd went wild. In a surprising surprising turn of events, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won Best Video for "Downtown" at the MTV Europe Music Awards. It was a competitive category, with Kendrick Lamar ("Alright"), Sia ("Elastic Heart"), Pharrell Williams ("Freedom"), and Taylor Swift ("Bad Blood") all receiving nominations. Swift had a total of nine nominations at the MTV EMAs, and she brought home the MTV VMA for Best Video in August, so it was a little surprising that she didn't win in this category — but it was exciting for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis as they picked up their first win of the evening.

The duo's sweet and genuine speech focused on expressing their immense gratitude for their fans: "We're not on a major label and we don't have a major budget ... This would not be possible without the people. We love you guys." The Seattle-based hip hop group may not have the budget of their high-profile competition, so it was inspiring to see their incredible talent recognized.

Recent winners in the category have been Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, PSY, and Lady Gaga, so Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are in good company. This is the duo's first win in the Best Video category, but it's not their first time receiving recognition from the MTV European Music Awards — they won Best New Artist in 2013.

Let's take a look back at the amazing video that earned Macklemore & Ryan Lewis this well-deserved nod:
