'Empire' Stars Perform On 'Pitbull's New Year's Revolution' & It Proves Why The Lyons Owned 2016
If I've learned anything in 2015, it's that it's not a party until you've invited Empire's Lyon family. The Fox TV drama series made its debut and became the defining show of the year. So, then it's only fit that Empire stars Jussie Smollett and Bryshere "Yazz" Gray performed "You're So Beautiful" on Pitbull's New Year's Revolution on Thursday night to close out 2015 in style. The song from the TV series was featured in an episode of the show's first season, but it has remained a fan favorite for most of the year.
Co-host Terry Crews and Real Housewives of Miami star Larsa Pippen introduced the performance, which opened with Smollett singing the first verses among a crew of dancers dressed in white. Immediately, the energy on the stage in Miami's Bayfront Park shot up and the crowd went wild. And when Yazz came on stage for his verses, even Smollett felt the electricity and showed off some snazzy dance moves of his own with the dancers. At the end of the performance, Smollett shouted, "Justice for Tamir!" referring to Tamir Rice.
It's a political statement from the stars of a show that has never shied away from making bold statements. On Empire, "You're So Beauitful" is the song that Smollett's character Jamal uses to publicly come out as a homosexual and the Season 2 premiere of the show made a statement about police brutality and black incarceration. Earlier in the special, Yazz and Timbaland took the Miami-based stage to bring the crowd a taste of "Bout 2 Blow." Smollett and Yazz have also performed "You're So Beautiful" throughout the 2015 on the Billboard Music Awards, the Teen Choice Awards, and Taraji and Terrence's White Hot Holidays.
And if this performance is any indication, I don't think the Lyons will slow down in 2016.
