The Hilary Banks Winter Survival Guide

by Vannessa Jackson

Though winter can be pretty in theory, in practice, it has its major downfalls. Sure, it's all fun and games at first, but the gray days and cold nights start to creep up on you. The nights of staying in watching movies and drinking hot cocoa lose their thrill sometime around early January — and yet, despite this, there still seems to be months of gloominess to go when that time rolls around. Fret not, though: Tons of inspiring people have survived the cold and emerged better for it, even though it's not always easy. For instance: Hilary Banks. Yes, it's true that Hilary Banks and the rest of the characters on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air lived their lives in sunny California — but still, Hilary Banks has the best tips for surviving winter.

Her character may not have been the brightest bulb, but when it came to fashion and attitude, she had the market cornered. To be honest, those are the two critical things to survive any cold winter. The right clothes will keep you warm, but the right attitude will give you a whole new perspective on life. Those are the few things that Hilary Banks was quite good at harnessing. Surviving winter is a must, and Hilary Banks knows just how to come out the other side stronger than ever.

1. Winter Sucks, You Can Mope About It A Little

Winter does provide some great picture opportunities with the beautiful snow and luscious park views, but it also kind of sucks sometimes. Slipping on ice, shoveling snow, and just plain being cold — winter has some downfalls. It's OK to take a moment and grieve the death of sunshine — but just remember you have to get up eventually and get back to your life.

2. Winter Clothes Are The Best

If you look good, you feel good, and that's very important during the winter time. So rip off the sweats and throw on a cute peacoat to brave the winter weather.

3. Go Shopping

This is a great time to shop for new winter gear! Sometimes, you've got to splurge big for comfort.

4. Find A Hobby

A lot of her hobbies involved finding someone to dress up, but at least she was being productive with her time. This might be a great season to find something indoors you can do that will keep you busy and away from the cold.

5. Make Time To Treat Yourself

Winter is all about dry skin and the lack of energy to actually put together a decent outfit that isn't just sweatpants — but now is the time to clean that up. Go find some products to rejuvenate yourself this winter, it'll make your days feel a little less cold and grim.

6. Woman Up

It's winter and sometimes that sucks. But like I said earlier, after moping, you should pick yourself up and go kick some butt — whatever that means for you. Hilary might have been a little intensely girly, but she knew when to buckle down and power through. Use that energy to get through this winter.

7. If All Else Fails, Call Daddy

Yes, sometimes we just need the loving encouragement of our parents. We also sometimes need them to give us a little extra money to buy those new fancy winter clothes.

I think I've made my point. Hilary Banks is my role model — her fierce optimism is something we can all learn from.
