There's More To The Kids' Choice Awards Than 1D

by Lia Beck

You might think you have a good grasp on kids these days, but Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards nominations, which were recently revealed, might prove otherwise. I would have assumed that One Direction and Ariana Grande would win every award and that would be that, but the KCAs are a little trickier than that. There are strange categories and actors you likely won't recognize. Here are the six most surprising things about the Kids' Choice Awards nominees.

1. Kids Like Wipeout

The Favorite Reality TV Show category includes American Idol, America's Got Talent, The Voice, and Wipeout. But I guess it makes sense that a show that involves people falling off of things slapstick-style would have a similar fan base to an awards show that uses slime.

2. None Of The TV Actors Are Recognizable

Do you know any of these names: Benjamin Flores, Jr, Jack Griffo, Ross Lynch, Jake Short? These are the nominees for Favorite TV Actor and I, for one, am unfamiliar with all of them. For a quick summary: Flores is the star of The Haunted Hathaways and is also a child rapper that goes by Lil' P-Nut (I can't make this up); Griffo is on a show called The Thundermans; Lynch is on Austin and Ally, a show I've definitely seen pop up on my cable menu; and Short stars on A.N.T. Farm. Got that? Okay, never forget it! This is important information!

3. Kids Are The Only People Who Liked Oz The Great And Powerful

Oz, which has a 59 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is nominated in the Favorite Movie category along with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Smurfs 2, and Iron Man 3. Kids also love sequels apparently. Someone make some more original kids movies!

4. Harry Potter Is Nominated For Favorite Book

The Harry Potter series (yes, as a whole) is nominated even though the final book came out in 2007, so some more great kids books would be fantastic too!

5. Billy Crystal Is Nominated…

And will definitely lose. KCAs are decided through voting and there is no way kids are going to vote Crystal as Favorite Voice from an Animated Movie over Steve Carrell, Miranda Cosgrove, and Katy Perry.

6. There Are Awesomely Absurd Categories

My personal favorites are Most Enthusiastic Athlete and Favorite Animated Animal Sidekick. How do you know who is most enthusiastic? Oh, Richard Sherman is nominated? Okay, it's definitely him then.
