The day I was able to choose my own bra out from under my mom’s modest and watchful eye, I went all out. Needless to say, it definitely wasn't one of those bras that didn't show under my shirt. It was bright pink and padded, covered in lace, had a petite silky ribbon at its center and its straps were embellished with glittering rhinestones. It was everything my 13-year-old self had imagined a proper bra should be.
Only, it was impossible to wear. The lace bra showed through everything I wore, the rhinestones looked lumpy under my shirts (not to mention fell off one by one in the wash) and overall, it was pretty uncomfortable. I was heartbroken. How else could I be a true, glamorous woman if my bra didn’t have every bell and whistle imaginable?
Thankfully, both my taste and bras have come a long way since I was 13. These ten are some of the best bras for everyday wear that still have just the right amount of razzle-dazzle to make you feel special — without being an impractical craft project.
1. Take It Easy in a Lightweight Mesh Bra
Mesh gets a bad rap in the bra world for being too lightweight for any kind of support, but if you're on the smaller side, this ultra breathable bra comes in cool colors and has an underwire for just the right amount of lift without any lumps or bumps.
2. Go For A Bold Print In A Classic Fit
A classic full-coverage, seamless bra could easily make for a boring option, but in a bold print, you get a fun style that will still be undetectable under your T-shirts. Only you (and anyone you choose to share a peek with) will know that there's something wild going on underneath.
3. Embrace the Delicate Details
Once you've given up unnecessary embellishments, you might find that all you need is that one standout detail. This smooth underwire bra has a small keyhole with a bow-tied ribbon at its center, which makes for a charming addition to a great T-shirt bra.
4. Do A Cool Criss-Cross Strap
This edgy caged style is a soft fabric bra that's wire-free, making it one of the comfiest to wear under a loose tee. It also has removable cups for days when you just need extra support without the obnoxious "double your cup size" padding.
5. Try Just A Hint of Lace
Finding a lace-free bra that feels fancy is difficult, but by keeping the lace to select areas like in an underwire trim, this bra reduces the chances that any lumpy texture will show through. A bonus? These smooth molded cups don't skimp on support.
6. Or Try A Soft, Lacy Bralette
If you refuse to surrender your lace (and I'm right there with you), make sure to choose a lacy number that's super soft, like this easy-to-wear microfiber bralette. The softer the lace, the less likely it is to show up under your clothes.
7. Go All Out And Combine Cool Straps and Soft Lace
If you're feeling daring that day, try a bra that incorporates a little bit — just a little bit — of everything. The soft lace of this bra is so thin that it won't be detectable, and with even skinnier straps, it won't dig into your shoulders creating annoying visible lumps.
8. Ditch The Straps Altogether
We all love straps for their extra lift and support, but ill-fitting ones can create bulges in places where it's annoying to see them. Take off the straps and go for a cheeky bra like this lightly padded one in a cute pastel color that feels more special than a beige full-coverage option. If you do decide you want to hold onto your straps, though, this bra comes with a removable pair.
9. Like Mesh But Want More Support? Try An Overlay
While mesh on its own isn't the most supportive, a simple overlay on top of a full coverage bra like this one still has the subtly sexy impact of a sheer mesh bra. Extra points for the keyhole cut out and lace trim detail!
10. Forget Underwire For A Smoother Fit
This bra has a hint of decorative trim and full-coverage contoured cups that give you all the support you need without old-school underwire. Removing the underwire makes for a smoother fit, and as a bonus, you'll never have to wonder when it's going to pop out and stab you in the rib cage.
