The Drag Queen Joke Went "Astray"

by Mallory Schlossberg

Not everyone was a fan of Ellen's jokes on Oscar night. In fact, Liza Minnelli said that DeGeneres's joke went "a little astray." Hmm, let's look into this for a bit. ICYMI, DeGeneres said in her opening monologue that she saw "the best Liza Minnelli impersonator I have ever seen[...]Good job, sir," implying that Minnelli was a drag queen. Obviously, that wasn't cool with Minnelli, who said to TMZ, "I think [she] thought it would be funny [...] but she never stopped after she said it and said, 'my friend, Liza Minnelli.' I think it went a little astray on her and I don't think she meant any harm at all, and she's a wonderful lady." Okay, so she's a wonderful lady.

Still, it seemed like Minnelli was kinda left out the rest of the night — she wasn't in the most tweeted selfie in the history of the universe (she says she got "pushed out of the way"), she didn't get any of the special pizza (but she said it was fine, since she's on a diet), but supposedly all is forgiven. After all, DeGeneres later tweeted this gem of a selfie of the two of them. Look how underwhelmed Minnelli looks (and the near-ironic caption):

Hmm. Well, she still thinks DeGeneres is a wonderful lady, just sometimes...tells mean jokes. Here's the video from TMZ in which you can see Minnelli in action:
