Tom Hanks & Daryl Hannah Need To Cameo In 'Splash'

by Michelle Lulic

Disney is ready to take us under the sea with an all-new take on yet another popular mermaid tale — A remake of the 1984 film, Splash . But this time around, fans are in for a whole new "tail." With Channing Tatum and his 22 Jump Street co-star, Jillian Bell, set to star, the Splash remake will instead feature a gender-swapped take on the unforgettable love story. Tatum will be playing the male version of Daryl Hannah's mermaid, Madison, and Bell will be playing the female version of Tom Hanks' Allen Bauer. In the midst of the '80s nostalgia and casting excitement, will Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah make a cameo in the Splash remake? I mean, is this movie still great without them?

Well, I'll tell you one thing. I seriously hope they do show up. Neither of the actors have responded to the news just yet, since the announcement of the remake only just came to the surface. With production on the film set to begin this fall, that should still leave plenty of time for Hanks and Hannah to clear their schedules. Considering the fact that Splash was a huge stepping stone for the careers of both of the original actors, it would only make sense for them to subtly appear as an ode to the original. Even if that means they each pop up on the screen for no more than a couple of seconds.

However, there are other factors about this project that give me hope that Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah might appear for more than just a few seconds. For one, the team behind the 1984 film is getting behind this one as well. With Splash's director, Ron Howard, and Oscar-nominated writer, Brian Grazer, returning to produce, it seems highly likely that they would try and get some of the original cast on board as well. I mean, they must need the reunion as much as I do.

It's important to note that neither Hanks nor Hannah reprised their characters in the separately-produced, straight-to-television sequel to the film, 1988's Splash, Too . Instead, each of their original characters were recast with actor Todd Waring playing Allen Bauer and actress Amy Yasbeck playing Madison. Perhaps, Splash fans can at least see Waring and Yasbeck make some kind of a return? But it's Hanks and Hannah who seem more fit to work with the first film's original producers, and I just really need to see the two together again.

Basically, it just wouldn't be Splash without them. Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell, you've got quite the role models to live up to.
