Amanda Bynes' Self-Portrait Is... Interesting

by Lia Beck

Amanda Bynes has been totally normal recently and that's totally awesome. After an intense downward spiral in 2013, Bynes ended the year by checking into rehab and enrolling at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising after her release. Now, she has taken another big step by returning to Twitter and not posting anything inappropriate or alarming. In fact, Amanda Bynes posted a self-portrait to her account on March 10 and also assured fans that she doesn't have a secret Twitter account where she's hiding all the wacky stuff.

Bynes first I'm-back-to-tweeting tweet on March 1 addressed her followers. The former actress wrote, "Hi everyone! I’m busy studying at @FIDM but I want to say I love you to my fans! Xoxo Amanda." At the time, Bynes even changed her bio to read "Fashion student" and deleted almost all of her old tweets. Now Bynes is back at it again. I promise you there will come a point where we don't analyze all of her tweets, but at this point the change is just so refreshing — and the art so... meh, but we'll get to that — that it's still impressive and noteworthy.

Now look, I am all for Bynes getting better, and it seems like she's doing a fantastic job of that, but that doesn't mean I'm going to sit here and claim that she should have a new found career as a self-portrait artist. The drawing is not the worst thing that has ever happened, but it sure ain't the best. I do love that she wanted to share it with fans (it's positive!) and the message that accompanied it shows that she wants it to be clear that the Amanda Bynes of this Twitter account is the real Amanda Bynes — the one that's getting her life together. Can't hate on that.
