Women have come a long way since the founding of this country. As America celebrated Women's Equality Day in commemoration of the 19th Amendment — women's right to vote — it's important that we keep in mind how contested the female body is even today because we still live in a patriarchal society. Women's Equality Day is important, don't get me wrong, but we have so much left to work toward for all women. Here are 9 tweets that show what it means to be a woman in 2016.

From serious gendered violence to microaggressions, women deal with a lot on a regular basis. We can't walk down a public street without worrying about street harassment, we don't get paid the same amount as men in the same professions, and everything costs more for women. If you don't believe me, consider the "pink tax," the extra amount that women have to pay for products and services that men also use. For instance, "women's razors" tend to cost more than "men's razors" and the main difference between the two products really just comes down to the color. Women are also taxed for female hygiene products.
