Nicki Minaj has been capturing the hearts of music and style lovers alike for a solid six years, since the release of her Pink Friday album in 2010. But Nicki Minaj at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards is a great reminder of why so many of us fell in love with her in the first place. Minaj is no stranger to a sartorial win — her 2011 VMAs look even earning her the title of "craziest" ensemble to hit this particular red carpet ever. From Harajuku style to Barbie pink wigs, she's worn it all. And worn it well. But at the Aug. 28 ceremony, Minaj is keeping things a little simpler.
Wearing a solid-hued, deep blue, body-hugging, cut-out-repping, mermaid train-sporting, harness neckline dress, Minaj hit the red carpet, no doubt, to celebrate her performance at the show. Although some folks might not be too astounded by her choice in dress, I personally think we're seeing a new side to Minaj these days: One who proves that taking a style risk doesn't have to translate to "wearing everything you can possibly get your hands on all at once." But rather, opting for bold detailing juxtaposed with simple staples throughout: Something a little more comfortable, but still totally sexy.
All that said, I can't help but wish she'd brought one of her many pastel-colored wigs to the show. I mean, can you imagine that blue dress paired with her beloved pink locks?
Nonetheless, I'm not complaining. There's nothing Minaj could wear that wouldn't make a statement.
