Calvin Harris & Rihanna Go Way Back

by Michelle McGahan

To get all Adele on ya, ~rumor has it~ that Calvin Harris will present Rihanna with the VMAs Video Vanguard Award on Sunday night. Truth be told, the Internet is a little confused (and kind of a little pissed) about the whole thing: After all, of all of the people to present RiRi with the iconic award — Drake? Kanye West? Beyoncé? hello? — it's a little weird that it's Harris who is the one who is doing the honors. I mean, sure, they collaborated on "This Is What You Came For" (which is up for several VMAs on Sunday), but are Calvin Harris and Rihanna actually friends? Let's investigate.

Turns out, these guys have more in common than just the "This Is What You Came For" collab (which I guess is a pretty big deal in itself). In fact, Harris and Rihanna go all the way back to 2011, when Harris served as Bad Gal RiRi's supporting act on the European leg of her Loud tour. And it turns out they're pretty darn supportive of one another — and Rihanna, especially, is totally a fan. Just take a look at some of her throwback fangirly tweets about Calvin Harris:

And, now with their super successful (and super summery) collab, I can actually see why Harris would be the one to present her with the award. Their names are definitely associated with one another at this moment in time, plus he and RiRi actually go way back. Not to mention the fact that she totally gave him some kickass exposure (what with Harris as her opening act and her hyped-up tweets and all), so it kinda makes sense that he returns the favor and sings her praises while presenting her with the award.
