by Rachel Simon

Tragic news for the world of baseball. On Sunday, the Miami Marlins announced that pitcher Jose Fernandez had died in a boating accident. In a statement, the team said that the Miami Marlins organization is "devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time." The statement also revealed that the team's Sunday game against the Atlanta Braves had been cancelled.

According to Fox News, Fernandez, 24, reportedly passed away early Sunday morning in the crash. Two other people were reportedly killed as well, according to a statement Miami Chief Petty Officer Nyxolyno Cangemi gave to The Associated Press, when the boat they were on apparently collided with a jetty. More details would likely be announced at a press conference set to be held later on Sunday.

The loss of Fernandez, a star pitcher not far into his baseball career, is enormous. The Cuban American player made headlines for his quick ascent to the major leagues, playing for the Marlins until his death. He was named to the National League All-Star game twice, and in 2013, he became the winner of the National League Rookie of the Year award. Upon the news of Fernandez's passing, Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr., issued a statement, saying, "All of baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez. He was one of our game's great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life."

The news of the talented player's death is truly heartbreaking, especially as Fernandez and his girlfriend were reportedly expecting a baby. R.I.P., Jose Fernandez.
