Hey Nerds, 'Star Trek' Beer Is Happening!

by Lia Beck

Wanna drink like a Klingon? If this is something you have desired before just now, then you probably already brew Klingon-inspired beer in your basement, but for the rest of us, there is now a simple solution. CBS has announced the release of a Star Trek beer called Klingon Warnog. Doesn't that just roll off the tongue? Can't you just imagine walking into a bar and ordering a cold pint of Klingon Warnog?

Klingon Warnog was announced on Monday and is produced by CBS Consumer Products and the Federation of Beer. Before you think The Federation of Beer is some government agency that you've never heard of, you should know that it's just a company that produces Vulcan Ale in Canada. Yep, Vulcan Ale is also a thing and I've gotta say, it has a much better ring to it than Klingon Warnog.

CBS calls Klingon Warnog, "a bold beer suited for the harsh Klingon lifestyle." For those of you who are really interested in the complete flavor profile of the beer, the description reads,

This singular beer incorporates rye malt into a modern Dunkelweizen grain bill, creating a flavor profile that is both familiar and unique. Warnog’s aroma is predominantly mild banana and clove produced by the German wheat yeast, supported by subtle sweet malt character from the use of Munich malt. The flavor draws heavily from the blending of the rye malt and traditional clove character, creating a very rich and unique flavor. The inclusion of wheat and caramel malts help to round out the mouthfeel of this beer, making this Dunkelweizen hearty enough to be called a Klingon Warnog.

While Klingon Warnog is great news for Star Trek fans who also like beer that smells like bananas, what's out there for passionate fans/borderline alcoholics who enjoy other series?

Well, there's Game of Thrones and Ommegang's collaboration, the newest of which is called Fire and Blood and which rivals Star Trek's nerdiness with this lovely description, "Named after the motto of House Targaryen, Fire and Blood is inspired by Daenerys Targaryen and her three dragons, Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion." Fire and Blood will be released March 31.

Harry Potter fans no doubt like to get their drink on too which is why it's unfortunate that Firewhisky doesn't really exist. Good thing you can make your own using bourbon and hot sauce. (Uh... be careful with that one.)

Like The Simpsons? Duff Beer exists in the real world and is sold at Universal Studios theme park and in the UK. Sorry, Americans who don't live in Orlando or Hollywood.

If you're interested in trying some Klingon Warlog for yourself, look out for the energy drink-looking cans when they hit stores later this year.
