A Mixtape in Honor of Gwar Frontman Dave Brockie

by Celeste Mora

It's a sad day for the metal community, since Gwar frontman Dave Brockie was found dead in his home Sunday. He was 50 years old. Brockie created Gwar, and with it, his alter ego, Oderus Urungus, starting a whole new wave of parody thrash metal. This has been the second recent loss for the band, since guitarist Cory Smoot passed away three years ago from a heart attack.

Brockie's friends and manager have all confirmed that he was a deeply creative person with many interests, and his 30-year involvement with Gwar showed his commitment to thrash. He is credited with coming up with the concept for the elaborately costumed, vulgar metal group, as well as their name, which arose from an elaborate joke involving animal sacrifice. Throughout his long career as the most vile of the "openly extraterrestrial" shock rockers, Oderus Urungus was known for murdering and re-murdering celebrities onstage, spraying fans with a variety of bodily fluids, and making such an obscene spectacle that he was arrested. His art was indescribable, and his humor was unrepeatable.

In honor of Brockie's game-changing contributions to metal and shock music in general, here's a mixtape of all things Gwar and Oderus Urungus, complete with a few lesser-known songs from Brockie's numerous side projects.

"Saddam A-Go-Go" - Gwar

"Immortal Corrupter" - Gwar

"Carry On My Wayward Son" - Gwar
