What True Love Really Is, According To Millennials

by Natalia Lusinski

Love can mean different things to different people, but what is true love according to Millennials? Is it the “happily ever after” couples you see on TV and in movies and books? Is it the person you can never get out of your head (even though you dated long ago, but nothing compares to that relationship)? Is it your grandparents who have been married for 50 years?

Some may think it’s a combination of things, like the definition of wedding vows, even if you’re not married — “to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.” Yet others may think it’s all the little things that rep big things, like making you soup (homemade!) when you’re sick.

But when you see seemingly strong relationships around you crumble, sometimes your belief in true love may waver. Does it really exist? How can it? However, then you see examples of true love IRL again, either among your friends or in your own relationship — and you become a believer once again. Sound familiar?

Yik Yak, the location-based social networking app — that’s made up of 99 percent Millennials — asked its users to define true love. Here’s what they came up with.

1. Permanence

2. Selflessness

3. Making Sacrifices

4. True Devotion

5. Complementing Each Other

6. Having Differences

7. Accepting Each Other At Your Best — And Your Worst

8. Being In It For The Long Haul
