4 Easy Ways to Wear a Coat After Memorial Day

by Mary Avant

It’s finally here, folks: Memorial Day. Not only does that mean taking some time to remember all of the amazing past and present-day heroes who have served our country, but it also means squeezing in a cookout or two, listening to this amazing Memorial Day playlist, pulling off this awesomely festive nail art, and celebrating the unofficial kickoff to summer. Which, in turn, means it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to transition that spring wardrobe right into the summer season.

While bringing out all of your white pants, short shorts, slinky dresses, and skin-bearing tank tops may be a no brainer for summer, it doesn’t mean you have to put all (or many, really) of your spring staples away. And yes, that even includes your lightweight spring coats. After all, even some of the warmest post–Memorial Day days have chilly nights, and there’s the occasional breezy afternoon that requires a little jacket.

And since I would never leave you without some guidance and inspiration on how to transition your favorite spring coat into the summer season, I’ve rounded up four ways you can do just that, thanks to ladies like Mandy Moore and Menu Sevari, who were spotted sporting their spring jackets at a recent Annenberg Space for Photography event in California.

1. Draped over a dress like Mandy Moore

Not only does a draped coat add an instant element of sophisticated glamour, but it's also a simple way to show off your favorite dress or skirt while keeping yourself warm on a breezy evening. The best part: You can slide the jacket off in no time flat if things heat up.

2. Paired with slouchy pants like Mena Suvari

The most casual-cool way to style slouchy cropped pants this summer? Finishing the look with a silk tank and basic boyfriend blazer, of course.

3. Matched with a crop top and maxi skirt like Bethany Joy Lenz

Show off your boho-meets-rocker side this season by pairing a lightweight leather jacket with a breezy, pleated maxi skirt and simple cropped top. Bonus points for a jacket that features edgy embellishments, like studs or zipper detailing.

4. Worn with a mini skirt and blouse like Crystal Reed

Summer style doesn't get much cuter than this. Nail the sweet tomboy look in a snap by throwing on a distressed denim jacket with a classic button-down blouse and flared mini skirt, plus a cute pair of heels for a little feminine flare.
