Fashion Forecast: Thursday, May 29th

by Tyler Atwood

Though some regions of the United States may be thinking "Spring weather? What spring weather?", it's still a joy to be on the other side of The Worst Winter Ever (aka the fallout from the Polar Vortex). Slowly but surely, the mercury is rising across the country, from Los Angeles's consistently balmy weather to New York's, well, mostly sunny skies.

If you're located in one of those lucky cities with warmth to spare, however, don't forget to bring along an extra umbrella or scarf. The weather is still temperamental this time of year, and it's not exactly amusing to be caught in a storm without your umbrella, or experience a chilly gust of wind when you've left your jacket at home. Furthermore, Weather.com predicts that much of the East Coast and parts of the Mid East are due for thunderstorms over the course of this week.

Thankfully, inclement weather doesn't have to be a sartorial drag anymore due to the influx of adorable accoutrements from scarves to sweet galoshes. And the ensemble underneath all of that weather gear definitely doesn't have to reflect the dreary forecast. So hold on to your umbrellas and pack accessories that can carry you through any type of weather, because the remainder of this week is bound to be a bit stormy. Here's what you should wear in your area on Thursday.

1. NEW YORK: 65 DEGREES AND MOSTLY SUNNY

With a high of 65 degrees on Wednesday, New York City is just brisk enough to pull out your summer-weight scarf as an addition to your ensemble. When paired with a simple white shirtdress and a neutral blazer, a bright scarf is perfect for the weather and the season. Lemlem's Walsh Striped Cotton-Blend Gauze Scarf is simply summery with its palette of vibrant shades and thin weave.

2. LOS ANGELES: 78 DEGREES AND SUNNY

Los Angeles will stay bright and comfortably warm through Thursday, with the temperature maxing at 78 degrees. Kick your after-hours outfit up a notch and try out a Spring 2014 trend with a pair of metallic shorts. Joa's Allison Shorts are incredibly chic, thanks to a muted, neutral pattern and elegant brocade fabric. Add heeled sandals and a white button-down blouse for extra glamour.

3. HOUSTON: 87 DEGREES AND EVENING THUNDERSTORMS

Houston may be storming on Thursday evening, but it will still be hot enough to merit a breezy ensemble. Brave the storm with a silk shift dress like Madewell's Morningside Shiftdress in Leopard Sketch. A black belt will ensure that your shape doesn't get lost in the frock. Just remember to pack an umbrella and galoshes in case your evening activities take you into the rain.

4. BOSTON: 60 DEGREES AND MOSTLY SUNNY

The ephemeral weather in Boston calls for removable outer layers, so if you're working in the city on Thursday, throw a pastel blazer atop your ensemble to keep warm in case of temperature drops (or you have overactive office air conditioners). ASOS's Cropped Blazer With Clean Lapel in petal pink will keep your look fresh for spring, and cozy for any adventures outdoors. Add a pair of beige trousers and a printed blouse, and you'll be all set for your Thursday plans.

5. JUNEAU: 60 DEGREES AND PARTLY CLOUDY

What could be better on a partly cloudy day than a cozy, oversized sweater in a brilliant shade? Zara's Oversize Sweater with its bright, sunny shade will keep you warm while adding visual intrigue to your outfit. Be sure to pair a voluminous sweater with a slim pencil skirt or skinny trousers, as too many bulky pieces in one outfit can be less than figure-flattering.

6. MIAMI: 84 DEGREES WITH SCATTERED THUNDER STORMS

With thunderstorms and rain predicted tomorrow in Miami, it may be sensible to fish out your favorite pair of portable rain boots for your commute to the office. If your existing pair is less than thrilling, pick up Chooka's Top Solid Mid Height Boots, which come in a range of smile-inducing shades and a shorter height than your average, clunky rain boot.

7. CHICAGO: 62 DEGREES AND SUNNY

Though it may not be much warmer than 60 degrees tomorrow in the Windy City, it will be bright and sunny. Celebrate the sun in a breezy button down with a full skirt and a jacket over the top. Free People's Color Block Button Down Shirt is both bohemian and office-appropriate.

8. PORTLAND, OREGON: 69 DEGREES WITH AFTERNOON SUN

Though Thursday morning may be cloudy in Portland, the sun will break out in the afternoon for a high of 69 degrees. Prepare for the temperature shift in a pair of summery pants, a sleeveless tank, and a light sweater. Vince's Asymmetric Linen Trousers in light grey are breathable enough for a warm day and will provide insulation for the morning chill.
